Ahhhhh ASD is now gone! What was BMW thinking? That artificial drone was annoying. I'm surprised at just how quiet the car is in sport mode now with the ASD bypassed.

Thanks for the excellent writeup Zooks. The wiring harness doesn't come with any instructions, so this post was very helpful.

Thanks Zook for the write up. Installed mine today along with a bunch of Dynomat. Technic should include a simple install guide since it's not obvious what to do.

I thought the active sound could be coded out?

It can be, but that means you have to bother getting a coding setup. Additionally, if you code it out, the module is still inline with the amp (just not giving any output) which results in some people hearing a high pitched hiss over the speakers.

That high pitched hiss was bothering my dog so went with the harness. He's much happier now.

I finally got around to installing the PnP ASD bypass harness in my 2016 M235i this morning.
The first difference I noticed was the HK sound system sounded remarkably better. Why shouldn't it? All that low frequency sound is really messing up the music.
Check out this thread where some one measured the audio spectrum.

BMW should really rethink the whole ASD thing

Man. That is it. I'm ordering an ASD harness this weekend.

Technic : Not sure a group buy is possible, but what with all the new M2 owners and this recent revelation, I'm sure there'd be enough interest ...

Thanks to Zooks instructions and a harness from Technic my M235i is now ASD free.

I did try to perform a simple pre-SPL reading and found out that flipping into sport mode adds about 5db of highway drone. I know that I should of completed more tests in different situations but the drone is what bothered me the most.

Below are a few of my drivers seat post installation observations:

- You lose some of the sitting still/low speed rumble.
- Sport mode is much more pleasant due to the now missing drone.
- I did have to adjust the tone for the stereo by adding in some bass but I do think this was required because of the ASD adding in low end rumble which is now gone.
- I have a MT and to me the real engine sounds that make it in now match the revs on the dash much better. I tend to shift by ear and feel which now feels more natural.
- The ASD removal makes the car sound like a 9 instead of a fake 11 almost like turning down loud music a few notches.

Those where a few quick of my own observations and to me one of the easiest mods to do which can just as easily be undone. I sorta understand why BMW adds in the ASD but after my short drive found that the ASD free car still sounds good and hope in the future that BMW adds the ability to turn it off in idrive. My suggestion for now is to use Zooks instructions to unplug the ASD unit and drive around to listen for your self, its not like the cabin goes dead quiet without ASD.

You can unplug the ASD unit, but that takes the radio with it. It's a good suggestion to try it before you buy the harness, so if you want to try that, you can pull the radio fuse for the same effect without having to take the trunk liner out.

As Silver6spd notes, it's a matter of taste. I find the car much nicer without ASD, but there's a lot of folks out there who like it. I do wish BMW had given us an iDrive option, though.

Zooks

I know its been awhile since I messed with fuses in a car (former loud car stereo guy) and was not sure how pulling the radio fuse affected any presets or security codes in todays cars if at all. I have changed a few car batteries but that was cutting power to the whole vehicle.

Yeah, disconnecting the battery in modern BMWs has spawned more than a few "My xxxxxx stopped working!" threads, but a straight fuse pull on the radio appears to be one of the safe ones.

Anyone getting a response back from TechnicPNP contact page? Tried contacting a few days ago, but received no response.

I guess there's no one else offering this solution?

I submitted a request for info ages ago and heard nothing. I recently submitted again and had a response by the next day. Ordered on 4/17 and it was delivered on 4/23. Now I just need to find some time to install it...

Update: finally installed it. This guide was invaluable - thanks for posting it.

Zooks527 thanks for the awesome write up. Just did it this morning and the car just sounds so much nicer. No fake sound and the HK system sounds cleaner as well.

As mentioned above, the torx driver required is a T40 and I wish I had grabbed one before I started. Had to run out to Home Depot half way through as I couldn't loosen the tie down without it.

Thank you Zook for the fine write up and pictures. Your work made this DIY a piece of cake. No more drone, no more hiss either. Now onto my next project, time to upgrade the exhaust, and listen to my M235 sing !!
Thanks again

Three cheers for Zooks527! Did mine this weekend, loving the new-to-me lack of artificial sound!

Just did this today, thanks for the write-up! I was able to get the liner and back plate cover out without having to remove the trunk seal, so, re-assembly was a piece of cake. It's much quieter now, though the loss of bass response is a bit of a downer, but worth the trade off for no more fakey-fake sound.

Has anyone heard from Technic recently? I put in a request via his web site in early June, he said the harness was out of stock until late June. I pinged the email and web site a couple more times since then with no response.

Other than coding (which I've read is not as good of a solution), are there any other options?

TIA,

DBinOC
