Can't get into diagnostic mode

Hi all - I am trying to help a friend code his 2 series (F22) with Bimmercode and I cannot get a confirmation that the vehicle is going into diagnostic mode. I have coded my G05 many times so I am familiar with the process, but when I push the start/stop button 3 times quickly in the 2 series, there is no indication that the car is going into diagnostic mode. Has anyone had any experience with coding the 2 series and is that normal?

I've coded my F23 228i a few times and never heard of "diagnostic mode". I just start the car, let it idle, connect with my BT OBD adapter and go from there. I've never had a problem with Bimmercode or Carly for BMW. Same goes for my F80 M3.
