BMW 218i 67 plate

So my car was working fine in the morning on the way to work. When I got in it later and started driving everything was normal until I stopped at lights and the start/stop cut the engine. When I started back up again the car came up with a drivetrain message and started misfiring, had the AA come out and have a look and they said it was coil 3 is the problem so I had that swapped out and it was still misfiring, had it pulled to a garage and they said they have changed the spark plugs and it's still the same problem, so I took it to another garage because the first on had it 3 weeks and didn't have a clue what was up with it. The second garage ran a compression test on it and stated that it had low compression on cylinder 2 causing it it misfire. They quoted me £8500 for a rebuild of the engine. Which is shit because the car has done 33,000 miles and should need it.

Just wondering if anyone has had similar issues/problems and how they when on about fixing it.

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks

Instead of an independent garage, what does BMW say? This would have emissions effects and are you sure there is no remaining warranty coverage? But, I am confused, is this a 2017? What does the year of the license plate matter?

In the UK, license plates issued in March are the year and September the year plus 50. So presumably this was registered late 2017. So out of warranty?

Yeah pal out of warranty, just trying not to pay the £8500 for a car that's worth £14000 may aswell just bought a new one if that's the case

If it is one cylinder in a car with 33,000 miles, I would try to find out exactly why. You shouldn’t have to pay $11000 to “rebuild the engine”. It may not be cheap but it really depends on what the cause is. Others with more knowledge about head gaskets, valves and pistons may be able to provide more insight.

The first step in diagnosing a problem is to scan the engine computer (DME) for codes. Get the OBDFusion app for your smartphone or tablet and the appropriate wifi or bluetooth adapter. The scna for codes, and post them here.

Update

Just an update having it fixed, been told that it's a melted piston head on cylinder 3. Probably caused by a dodgy fuel injector or something. Told me it'll be around £3000 to sort it out. Not nearly £10,000 thankfully. Thankyou for everyone who posted you've probs saved me some money.

Appreciate it cheers
