Example of Repairs on a 2015 M235 xDrive Coupe

I am owning my M235 Coupe now for six year. Current odometer reading is 67k miles. This is my 5th BMW. I typically drive them to the point where increasing repairs do no longer warrant the ongoing maintenance. For reference: the 2nd house hold daily driver is a 2016 X3 with 94k miles on it - zero repairs other than normal wear (tires, rear brakes, oil and fluid changes).

On both cars I do change oil every 10k miles or once a year whatever comes first and I have changed other "lifetime fluids" (rear and front differential, transfer case, automatic transmission) after 60k miles.

I am out of warranty on both cars.

The X3 has been flawless to date.

On the 2-Series things are starting to add up:

- fixed leaking seals on front and rear differential
- Automatic Transmission replaced at 60k miles (BMW paid 80% of this as it was a "porous case" that could not be repaired).
- O2 sensor replaced.

I plan to replace water pump / thermostat at 75k miles proactively as I take the car on regular long drives (600 miles one-way) and prefer not to get stranded.

I am still very satisfied with the car nevertheless and plan to drive it much longer. I am interested to hear other experiences from owners with similar mileage / age.

sure beats car payments. My 2015 only has 20k on the clock and so far so good.

Same model year 2 Series, but nowhere near your mileage. Never had a repair needed or done....so far.

2017 (took delivery in 2016) M240 w/95,000 miles here with no major repairs to speak of. Fluids (almost all of them), brake pads & front rotors, air filters (cabin and engine), wiper blades, spark plugs, tires, a windshield and a tail light (grounding issue first and later a bulb). I think that's about it. Other than the windshield and the tail light, nothing that wasn't scheduled.

Of course this excludes the body work due to the guy who side-swiped me and a rim thanks to New England roads. But I can't put either of those on BMW quality issues.

Now I need to go find something to knock on...

OP

Your experience is similar to mine. I replaced my rear differential due to bad seals at 38K and recently had to do the rear diff seals again at 90K. Currently at ~97K miles. Should turn over to 6 digits in mid-September.

One thing I would add is the fitting on the upper radiator hose from the coolant expansion tank. This fitting is problematic (based on conversations with other local M235 owners) and is ~$35 to purchase. Mine failed in the parking lot at my job and I ended up having to take it to the dealer to get fixed. If you do not want to get hosed (I had no choice but to take it to the dealer due to circumstances), buy one and replace it proactively. Beats spending $350 at the BMW Service Center.

The other maintenance issue will be the fuel injectors. With the direct injection engine, you will likely experience carbon fouling. When I did my plugs, this was apparent at ~60K. I put a can of Jectron in the tank every couple of weeks. Don't know if it helps but it makes me feel better...!

Sounds like you're having a positive ownership experience. Enjoy!

I'm at 58,000 miles on my 2014 M235i. I've had to fix the following:

- Oil filter housing gasket
- Door lock actuators
- Charge pipe
- Windshield washer pump
- Hose from upper radiator hose to expansion tank
- Trunk latch
- Park brake cable clip

M235i. Car has sport cat and Dinan tune. Mostly a commuter with spirited driving when I can find an open road. I do all service on time.

55,000 miles.

- Front lower arms (started getting play)
- Oil filter housing gasket (standard)
- Charge pipe (standard)
- Hose from upper radiator hose to expansion tank (standard)
- A/C Compressor! $2500. (random)

Ah, the dreaded door lock actuators.
I have just turned 50K miles on my 2015 235, with minimal problems, except for the door actuators.
The driver's side went about 5K miles ago.
Now the passenger side unit is acting up. It works if I manually unlock it from the center lock, but it is still annoying.
Limping along for now, since I don't have a passenger more than a couple of times a week.

2014 and 50k miles. No repairs so far, but now passenger side folding mirror has stopped folding and most likely the park break cable clip needs to get fixed.

I have 61K miles and virtually trouble free. I had to replace the expansion tank to radiator cooling line last week, otherwise no repairs outside of warranty and as I recall the only one under warranty was the know rear tail light issue.

2015 m235 75k:

2019 - Charge pipe needed replacement (covered by BMW)
2020 - BMW found some leaks (can't remember where) but they luckily covered it. Wasn't too bad though.
2021 - coolant return line exploded. 45$ cable + 26$ coolant
2021 - battery finally gave out. 209$ plus 50$ for install and register

2016 M235 6MT RWD, M LSD, piggyback tuner, DP, CP, IC, MPE. Car currently has ~55K miles now, owned since new. Most reliable car I've ever owned and I've owned primarily Japanese cars prior to this. With exception to what BMW as part of the 4yr maintenance, I do all my own work.

- Oil changed by me every 5K miles since new. $90 for 0W30 BMW oil and Mahle oil filter. Easy job.

- OEM sparkplugs at 40K mile. $90, done be me. Somewhat easy job, just a lot of things need to moved out of the way to access.

- Brake fluid changed at 30K in 2019 by BMW under factory 4 yr maintenance program. Brake fluid currently tests fine.

- Accessory belt tensioner and accessory belt changed at 50K as preventative maintenance. $180, done by me. Easy job.

- Coolant return line at 50K as preventative maintenance. $40, done by me. Easy job.

- Coolant replacement at 55K miles as preventative maintenance. $40, done by me. Easy job.

- Cabin filter replaced by BMW at 30K and then by me at 50K. $30, done by me. Easy job.

- Charge pipe replaced with FTP charge pipe as preventative maintenance at 35K. $200, done by me. Somewhat easy job.

Likely next spring:

- Original pads and rotor replacement

Things I routinely inspect:

- Suspension and steering (currently has Dinan springs and Bilstein HD Damptronic shocks)

- Oil filter housing gasket

- Valve cover gasket

- Bottom of engine and drivetrain inspected at every oil change. Currently no weeping or leaking of gaskets or seals.

I'd be curious to know what the cost is of the oil pan gasket change. Had to do that for my E90 a year or two ago. It was pricey.

Whatever the cost of that, though, it's a great repair record and good news for someone like me who likes keeping a car for a long time.

Basically the same engine, so unless its AWD it's the same. If you mean the B58 I have no idea how likely they are to spring a leak but the procedure / labour involved is likely similar...

I see a lot of these coolant line. Is this issue only for m235i or does this plague the m240i too?
