I would have preferred an M2 with a stick, but they wouldn't sell me one with a convertible top so I went with the M240i because convertible was the primary purpose. Great car and welcome to the F23 club.

What's everyones thoughts on the perf of a coupe vs vert? I own both a 2020 Miata and a 2017 M240i. Eventually, one will have to go. I love my Miata, but my M240 is a solid notch higher in performance and refinement. I know it's been discussed a lot here, but is the M240i vert overly heavy?

I wouldn't think this is a fair comparison. The Miata is a roadster where the M240 is not. The later has more room and the suspension is not as tight as the Miata. To me, these are 2 different categories. I would compare the Z4 S30i to the Miata and the former is much more livable as a daily driver. If you are looking for more room the M240 is the way to go. If you are looking for a powerful roadster, the Z4M40 will not disappoint.

I guess, the question is are you looking to track the car? If you are not, me personally think that while the m240i is heavy, its still nimble and powerful enough to not feel that heavy. I was considering a miata and a coupe m240i myself and end up going m240i vert and I couldnt be happier. I just added some strut brace from KC and damn car feels a lot more rigid and steering responsive too.

I'd echo the view that comparing Miata and M240i convertible is apples-to-oranges, in that they occupy different solution spaces. For me, my M235i Convertible is more like a Grand Tourer in the truly original sense of the term: a sporty open-top with a big engine that makes touring easy and enjoyable, but can still do daily drives and be fun on twisty roads. I owned a Mk.1 Lotus Elise 111s Millennium Edition which was like the Miata in many respects, and the ideal car for a 60-mile cross-country trip in the summer, but not something I'd ever do a long journey in. Even 'though I could afford to keep it, in the end, I disposed of it because I just wasn't using it often enough to justify the insurance and maintenance.
