Time for tires . . .
37,000 miles on factory Michelin PSS and decided to attract foreign objects to the rear passenger side tire to the tune of two screws and two nails . . . sigh. The suggested replacement tire is PS4S. 225/45ZR18 and 245/35ZR18 - all at around 6/32. I love the turn-in and wet grip is fantastic. At an eye-watering 11 bills a set (mount and balance included), I need something a bit more affordable.
I've heard and read reviews that average out to middle of the road for Kumho PS91 (about a 2 point behind in the TR reviews) . There was also a mention of Federal Evoluzion ST-1. At $650 and $450, respectively, I wouldn't mind if they lasted half as long as the PSS. I could just replace the rears with PS4S and get the fronts done later (still expensive!!) No AutoX or track days for this car. It is strictly DD. What say ye?

The Rack shows staggered PS4S' for $774 delivered. How do you get from there to $1,100 mounted and balanced?

The MP4S tires are worth every penny.

Don't go for a performance downgrade to save $$ - it isn't just about longevity. A few hundred more will be worth it over time for the improved driving enjoyment. And don't mix styles front/rear if you can help it.
FWIW, Continental ExtremeContacts were cheaper than MP4S, comparable performance (perhaps even better in wet), and I found them to not chew up the outer fronts as badly as I heard for the MPSS (never actually ran those myself to directly compare). I was very happy with these until I switched up to something more track-ready. |

if the PSS’s can save u some funds it’s still a very nice tire.
Don’t think there’s anything to it but I picked up screws and nails at a high rate with my PSS’s |

Thanks all for the feedback!
I pulled the trigger on a set of Federal Evoluzion ST-1 @ $384 shipped. All of the reviews I've read about them came back positive especially from folks that used them for DD duty. A local guy gave them rave reviews after about 12K miles on a set. I should have em mounted this Saturday if I can squeeze in an appointment with the tire shop.

Got them mounted up on Thursday. ~$88 to mount, balance, and install. Even with the mold release junk on it and low temps (35ish degrees Thursday night), I couldn't feel a difference. I bombed a few off-ramps yesterday and I think these may be winner . . . Still too early to definitively say they are better than Michelins in performance. They definitely win in price. I'll report back after 1k miles.

Yep.
Evoluzion ST-1
When it was time for tires on my CTS-V, I went the inexpensive route as well. I was not going to drop 10 bills for tires on a DD. I went with Achilles ATR Sport 2 even after many forum goers said I would crash and die. For ~$450 shipped, mounted, and balanced, they have been great tires for DD. They are 80% of the performance and ~45% of the price of the Conti DWS I had on there. Roads less traveled.

Quick update after 200ish miles!
Took Fuzzy out in the rain today to grab some pre-Xmas groceries. It was high 30s to low 40s. The tires performed really well. They gripped up really well on the off ramps and on the interstate. They were well mannered in these low temps and wet weather.

Although my situation is a little different I also went with budget tires for DD and normal driving trips (Interstates) on my squared wheel set. I do have summer UHP’s on the staggered set, for special occasions. I only drove the Velozza ZXV4 home from the shop (4 miles) so I can’t report on them yet. The reviews say they will provide good wet handling and quiet ride, which is what I need for DD.
