320 vs 328 question

I did some quick research and I found that the tune and pistons are the main differences between the 2 engines. I was wondering if it were possible to run a 328/228 map on a 320/220 successfully?

will it work? Is it going to be reliable? Has anyone done this?

I read about this somewhere and the consensus was that it's not possible. The components around the lesser engine are different and not capable of withstanding the increased pressure, load, heat, etc. (that's all I can remember, no idea about the specifics)

simple answer - no. The compression ratios are different and the 20is run lean.

HOWEVER, you can run a piggy back, like say JB4, with updated fuel wires and get great power out of the car, especially on some e85. But you will not be able to get close to the 328i tuned. Basically yes a 28i tune could work on a 20i because they are both N20s, but due to the factory maps and systems, you need some extra modifications.

Well no. On a 20i all you need is a JB4 on map 5 and flex fuel wires and you are good.

28i "maps" technically don't exist yet stateside because no on has been able to flash the DME yet.

Either way, safer to mod a 20i then a 28i as long as you have it on map 5 with flex fuel wires, because you get not where near the engines limits but still gain a nice significant amount over stock.
