Brought my m240 in for standard service today. They wanted to update the ECU with the recall which I declined. They said the engine was running too rich on start up and that the update would make it run more lean. Makes sense that this would cause less pops from the exhaust. They're keeping my car overnight as they're waiting to hear back from BMW that there won't be any issues with me declining the software update.

I'm getting my car serviced next week and now I'm nervous about this update. Does it only affect the exhaust or does it also change something else?

Yah, my 2016 M235xi ragtop definitely had a better exhaust sound than my 2018 M240xi ragtop.
When in S mode, the M235xi would make a pleasing fart sound on upshifts and pops on downshifts.
I've never heard the farts on upshifts on the M240xi in any mode and only hears minor pops on downshifts if DSC is off.
Other than that, I love my M240xi, it's even more stupid fast than the M235xi.

2019 240ix. Idk about any updates, my exhaust pops like crazy (in sport/+). Was built not too long ago either. That being said, the '16 235ix made completely different sounds, and louder pops when getting off the gas. The B58 makes a lot more noise on mid-rev upshifts.

Sorry, but that sounds damaged to me.

It really doesn't matter, but I grew up with American V-8s. I love my 230i and it doesn't sound like that, thankfully.

Perhaps I heard too many rivers that sound like that, I just don't like the popping.

Tastes change. I’ve heard V8s so deep it makes you butt clinch and a V12 go to redline that sounded like a banshee. Turbo cars and their pop and burble is a unique sound and I quite enjoy it. Anyone who has been close to one of the maniac turbo two liters of old probably has a fondness for the sound in general.

Resonator delete should make your ears and bankroll happy.

Personal taste is understandable. I've just noticed that the younger generations tend to like it more, as more and more modern cars these days have that sound.
