Coilover basics (w edc?)

Debating swapping my current setup (228i w dinan springs vs stock shocks/shockware edc) for coilovers, but would rather not code out edc as I kind of don’t want to mess w onboard electronics more than I already have…

Are the options basically:
KW DDC
Ohlins Road and Track w EDC simulator kit
Bilstein B16 damptronic?

Are there pros and cons of each model?

Or would other non EDC models just work better w EDC code out?

I would think that you would need to state what you need the aftermarket suspension for. Is it for faster lap times or ride height?

I would say primarily better road/canyon handling, planted feeling on turns, than stock, but less crashing over bumps/potholes on the dinan springs. Trackability would be a plus.

That being said, I've been meaning to have the shop look at the state of the front suspensions or something

Great question.

I went through this with my M240i. I ended up going for the B16's. You can find my review in this subforum.

As far as the B16's, they totally transformed the car. They do not like to be lowered much more than stock. I tried three different heights, and stock height (I sold it recently) was by far the best handling vs. the two lower hieghts (1" and 0.75" lower than stock). The difference between each mode was much more pronounced as I raised the car.

With that said, the KW is what I would go for if I wanted to actually lower the car. They are fantastic CO's (great quality, consistant good reviews) and tight with BMW so everything fits well.

As far as keeping EDC? If I hadd to do it again, I would probably gone for the less expensive non-EDC CO's, and had it coded out. I am a "set and forget" kinda guy, and I found I always ran the suspension in one mode, Sport. The roads here in the Bay Area for the most part suck, so anything that is overly stiff beats the snot out of the car, and you for that matter.

good luck!
