The heaviest lift for EVs (no pun) is accelerating the car's mass. Less mass means faster 0-60 times, greater efficiency, less rolling resistance, and longer range. |

There are plenty of areas to save weight on these massively heavy EVs. On the other hand, these are so heavy, what’s another 50 lbs?

I’d be surprised if the glass roof doesn’t weigh more than a steel roof with a ‘normal’ sunroof tbh.

I do have an additional $0 deductible glass coverage for my iX only. It covers all safety glass on a vehicle including the roof. I read through the policy and it didn’t have any exclusions for sun or Panoramic glass roofs. Some insurers exclude roof glass for glass coverage policies. Check with your insurer. |

I had a 2014 SQ5 which I ordered without sunroof. The same exact car with sunroof was about 100 kilos heavier.

Every little bit counts. Want the same interior headroom as a glass roof but with a traditional opening sunroof? You'll have to design your vehicle to be 2" taller. That change itself will add weight, plus you've increased the surface area of your aerodynamic profile, reducing range even more.
It's really no surprise that the more traditional looking an EV appears, the less range and efficiency it has. |
