car is ready to collect. They re-ran the same tests/Mechanic also drove the car in the required manner (a guy i can trust from previous experience) and the car no longer makes the noise apparently.

i'm going to take photos of the turbo and inside just for my own curiosity before they send it back to germany.

i don't use the cars performance anymore anyway so i'm not fussed tbh. It was a worrying niggle that has at least been looked at and something was found and done about it so i'm happy. I'll just keep on extending my warranty indefinitely.

On my end, the used transmission oil analysis finally came back today. No issues at all. Aluminum, iron, copper, and lead came back at 26ppm, 52ppm, 17ppm, and 2ppm, respectively, on a 24k mile sample. Good news! There really should have been something elevated there if it was losing a bearing or the gears were somehow mangled.

I'm forced to conclude that either a) I'm barking up the wrong tree or b) the whine is inconsequential. I just can't fathom it not coming from the transmission given how specific it is to lower forward gears. Probably time to quit worrying about it, maybe re-sample if something changes, and do a UOA on the engine at the next oil change just on principle. If nothing's mechanically failing, I'm not going to keep chasing it.

Meh. This sound has started grating on me again lately. I don't think anything has changed, I just think I can't quit focusing on it. I'm still convinced that it's gear noise, and there's some kind of resonance that makes it more noticeable at certain rev ranges. 1700-2500RPM in 3rd and 4th are the worst. Below those revs it builds continuously from an unobjectionable whir to the nasty whine that peaks in the low 2k's. I went for a joyride this morning and discovered that there is NO problem if:
-I keep my foot all the way in it
-I keep the revs well above 3k

Sounds great under those circumstances. Sadly that's not really a solution. I crawled under it earlier in the day to check mounts, heat shields, shift linkage, etc. for any obvious problems. One of the bolts on the trans mount bracket was a touch loose but snugging it up didn't help. I also didn't see anything weird like poly mounts installed by the PO or a short shift kit with hard bushings. And everything around the trans appears to be in its proper place.

So I'm a little torn. The trans fluid change did wonders after about 500mi of letting the new fluid work...great shift action, no more lockouts. But the sound is soooo annoying.

I’ve heard it in my car.
Wondered about it.
Forgot about it.
Heard it again.

Based on feedback here, for now, I’m comfortable believing it’s normal (or impossible to find).

Going through the same thing right now, just got my AT serviced and the noise has come up. mainly on a launch in 1st gear-coasting through into 2nd. here's a vid. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xt9fA36Pt5o
I want to say this is normal very badly.

I started to hear this whine last summer after I had my transmission serviced. I hear it a lot after the car is warmed up. Mostly in 1st gear under moderate acceleration. Then shifting from 2 to 3, and 3 to 4, there is a whine during the shifts some times. I hate that it makes that noise but the car performs and functions 100% perfectly.

Mine used to do it. Think I started noticing it around maybe 40k miles. Started slipping badly at around 71k, so sent it off to Pure for a Stage 1 build.

Out of curiosity, what does that build cost?

^^

$5,999 plus 1,750 for upgraded converter. There are less expensive options now. A couple shops are doing Stage 1 builds for around $4,500 now.

That isn't too bad. Nice to know that is an option in case the whine turns into something more.

have you had any loss of performance/slipping? Cause I'm in the same boat as you. Had my shit serviced about a month ago and the whine is annoying as fuck!

did you do a fluid change previously? Or did the noise just happen one day?

Nope. The car is performing great. Sometimes I get bucking when the car isn't that warmed up yet and when I'm babying the throttle-- the car did this prior to the service and prior to the XHP tune.

I am now noticing the whining the most when the car is really warm. And shifting from 2 to 3, and 3 to 4, there is a whining buzz as it shifts.

i’m starting to think this is just a characteristic of this transmission. If pure drivetrain solutions still offered a stage 0 upgrade i would’ve done it, unfortunately they don’t. I’ve seen that some people whine reduced in sound after a couple of months, have you experienced that? And i do get the bucking as well even before i tuned, usually when the car is cold.

It's very random. There are days of driving where I don't notice it but at times I'm just driving and not trying to hear it. Given that there are zero performance issues, and others with the same whine have mentioned no performance issues I'm going with that this is just what these transmissions do.

The root cause is mysterious though. Could it be that the sound dampening is compromised after being serviced? Is the new pan not as thick and allowing more sound? Someone mentioned that the service cleans out the gunk buildup on the internal components, so we are hearing more after service....but if this was true then wouldn't people hear this when the car is brand new as well?

hopefully one day we know the root cause. Other than that the whine in my car has gone down a little bit (or so I want to believe it has), only really noticeable on hard launches and low speed/rpms, usually in parking lots and such or coming out of a corner/turn. my consensus is that it’s normal. Don’t you think?

my f30 started making the same noise around 1.5 years ago at 57k km (35k mi), I finally was able to get the shop foreman to go for a ride with me and he acknowledged the whine. He performed an oil balancing on the transmission and found out it was 1L low on transmission fluid, he ended topped it up and the sound did not go away.

Recently did did the pan and fluid replacement on my 2017 M240i that makes the noise. No visible contaminants in the old oil and the oil still looked very clean and green, which was not the case in my 2014 228i. The noise persists. I'd consider it to not be harmful. Kinda sounds nice ngl.
