Back Seat Removal

Does any one know how to safely remove the back seats in the F22 M235i? I drive an E85 BMW Z4 now so I'm used to only having 2 seats. I feel that the space back there isn't really comfortable or used so I was hoping to shed some lbs if possible.

Why only remove the back seats? There are tons of unused bits and pieces in the vehicle that can be removed to save additional weight.

I think he's just being a smart ass.

Nothing wrong with removing rear seats IMO.

Back seat removal on the M235 is very easy. For removing the seat bottoms, you grab the front portion of the seat bottoms and pull towards you and up. You'll hear the clips disengage. This section is very light. Pulled the side bolsters out. Fold down the seat backs. You will see some torx bolts at the bottom (one for each side). Just undo the one bolt on each side, and then start pulling the seats apart. I started with the one on the left side of the car, pull it outwards and forwards, you'll eventually get it out. They are heavier.

A good idea is to put back the side bolsters to hide cabling and electronics to prevent damage. Put them back into its slot in the side bolster, then clip everything back in. 30 minute job. Good luck

How much weight does this save?

I'm curious what the empty space is going to look like..

I was more concerned with space than weight nevertheless the 3 parts together are roughly 60 pounds.

Sarcasm aside, some people yank the back seats for decent reasons:

-You can throw crap in the back (Bikes, tools, dogs) things that would otherwise screw up the leather.
-You'll shave weight, 60 lbs is not much but it's free.
-You'll get more noise in the car, which if you like hearing your exhaust isn't a bad thing. Typically that seat + covering the opening to the trunk conceals a lot of exhaust noise.
-If you AutoX or track and decide to run 5 point harnesses the back seat is useless anyways and this makes the tether point easier to access.

I used to yank the rear seat out of my Sentra all the time because it made the rear seat much larger so when I was transporting my then giant CRT TV back and forth from school I didn't have to worry about it crushing and marring the seats. I permanently damaged/stretched the rear seats in my Acura from hauling some heavy cargo in the back seat.

I'm sure he has reasons which is why I asked. He must have a good reason to take apart a nice car.

A question was asked, I provided the answer. This is why we have a forum like this. In my mind, there are no stupid questions.

Do you notice any rattles or noises when driving with the seats off?

just incase it helps anyone - i just removed the seats in my m235i convertible.

bottom of seat - pull up and forwards from front edge.

seat backs:
remove two torx screws at bottom of seatback

then push upwards and then lever bottom edge forwards.

you wont get it out unless you push the back of the seat up.
