Odd aux/USB connection issue

So I know that iDrive does not support devices connected via the Aux port but my old 30-pin iPod Classic played just fine through the car's speakers until I exchanged the short Aux/USB to 30-pin cable for a longer one, at which point it didn't work any more. Stranger still, the long cable brought up a BMW logo on the iPod screen, so it saw my car, which I found astonishing. However, it will not register any input. I guess I will switch back to the short cable but can anyone shed any light on this issue? I just want to get a cable that is long enough to enable me to place the connected iPod in the cup holder. Thanks!
