Haha no sweat, I had that same debate with my right brain, earlier. The wires didn't seem long enough when I tried out front, but maybe I'll give it a go again and get creative. I can't actually see it at all when driving, so it doesn't bother me.

Any tricks for sight setup? Seems like every which way I try it still looks crooked. Doesn't help our dashes are slanted/angled and our drivers seat is crooked, but hey.. And of course, I take a road trip to Nelson, BC today, beautiful day, not ONE damn cruiser, just a few small chimes from the Redline..

Worst case I'll get a longer wire ordered and run it in a cleaner fashion. You got me all worked up now, thanks.

You can do that just like push it to the bottom

I'm using the giant escort suction cup thing and it places the unit closer to the wire and sort of behind the mirror. Also, I think the plug might be on the other side of my 9500.

This thread was super helpful. I have a 2013 M6 that I wanted to "get rid of the hanging cord" of my V1. I didn't use the Wiretap kit, instead I used the wiring kit that came with the V1 for the install. I gently scraped a little insulation off the Positive wire from the plug. in the pics above (that lone middle wire in the bottom row in the plug) and used the splicer from the V1 kit. For ground, I was able to force fit the black wire from the V1 kit to a little metal module. I tugged on it to make sure it wasn't going to vibrate loose and it stayed.
The biggest challenge was fitting all the wire that comes with the V1's kit into that little area created by the covers and getting the covers snapped back on correctly. I had to fiddle with that a few times to get it right.
I was very happy this morning to not have the wire hanging down and when I put the "parking" sun visor in my windshield this morning, I didn't have to mess with a cord in the way from the detector, Yay!

Just did mine.. My compliments to the OP for a great DIY write up.. I dont have a tremendously secure feeling that this connection will hold up over time since, while the insertion prongs did hit pay dirt, they didnt wedge in with a lot of resistance and were easily pulled out. But as for now, its good to go, and with a little luck, provided the heavy V1 doesnt give up the suction cup ghost on the windshield, this should work out well.. Next step, I guess, is to buy a new V1 for that 'Junk-K' feature to eliminate all the falsing.. Mine is too old to be updated.

I have connected a mirror tap without problems on my past 3 BMWs however I have had no luck with my M2. For those that have had success, please tell me where you placed the red and black wire. The mirror plug has a gray wire on the left, green in the center and brown on the right.

What am I missing - cannot unplug mirror connector

Tried to do my install last night.

For the life of me I could not disconnect the mirror power plug. This is 2017 M240i. I tried pulling, i tried depressing what looks like a locking tab in the center ?

It looks like I should be able to get the taps inserted without removing the plug.

Those of you that used MirrorTaps which length did you use ?

I did my install today. I thought I ordered 12" mirror tap but I ordered 10".
I was able to make it work by bending the pins where they come out of the connector.
You really need a 12" though so that you have enough to make the install easier.

You have to depress the tab on the front and the back of the connector to get it to release.

Longer for convertible probably 14". Think I had 12" from my coupe and it's ok but really cutting it close.

Did you use the rain sensor connector or the standard one described in this thread? I read somewhere else that the standard one doesn't provide enough juice for the R3.

Did you end up figuring this out?

Did not have success on my 18 M2 with my uniden R3. To add insult to injury I blew a fuse trying to install and my interior lights stopped working.

First of all, thanks to the OP for the DIY, it gave the tips normally missing from instructions.

As my 2017 M240i rearview mirror is not itself powered, I decided to tap into the rain sensor connection. It went smoothly.

So, this is what I used in my setup:

Car: 2017 M240i
Radar: Uniden R3
Radar Mounting Mechanism: The big suction cup included with the R3
Mirror Tap: Radar Mount Radar Mount Mirror Wire Power Cord for Escort Radar Detectors With Inline Fuse RJ11 (3005201) https://www.amazon.com/Radar-Mount-M...+mount+3005201
Tools: A credit card.

Heres the cable packaging:

Size: 176.9 KB
Name: IMG_3633.JPG
Views: 2592
Size: 225.6 KB

Opening the mirror housing was easy, starting from the middle and just sliding the credit card back and forth, applying some pressure. The left side gave up first, very easily and then the right.

I found a single connector, with three wires:
Black (left): Ground
Purple: (Center)
Red (right): Live

The wires from the Radar Mount slide in but i had to put some pressure, specially on the red wire. I did not bring the connection down, as it seemed I could just do it while connected just a little unconfortably because of the mirror standing in the way. Small hands might be of help.

Here's the connection:
Name: IMG_9784.JPG
Views: 2579
Size: 145.7 KB

Then, so i had to see the least cable possible, i decided to make it go through the middle of the right plastic housing. First I tried to make it come out through the roof, but too much cable showed (the length was ok though).

Name: IMG_4596.JPG
Views: 2588
Size: 208.0 KB

The plastic housing snapped right back, and here's the end result:

From the passenger side:

Size: 161.2 KB

From the drivers position:
Name: IMG_8730.JPG
Views: 2598
Size: 199.4 KB

Hopfully this helps someone else that also does not have a powered rearview mirror. Cheers!

Thanks for this, super helpful! I just got my mirror tap today and installed - took about 10min! I didn't go for the mount - just stuck it on the windshield above the mirror.

I have an Escort Passport MAX which I had, until now, mounted with the standard suction cup mount and the standard cable. Here are some photos before starting:

Mirror Tap Info:

The mirror tap is pretty clever and basically allows you to hardwire the radar to the power that goes to the mirror without having to run wire all over the place. This was the harder portion of the instal, but only because of the lack of a clear DIY, hopefully this will help mitigate that for anyone else who needs.

Name: MT-4000 Series - .080" X .525" Long Tap

SKU: MT-4012

Link: http://www.mirrortap.com/mt4000.html#Standard

This can also be found on the site by selecting BMW and selecting in the auto dimming column for the 2 series. This is what you'll want to get.

Blend Mount Info:

The blend mount is also a cool bit of kit which basically allows you to mount your radar directly under the rearview mirror, mounted on the stem that holds the mirror. You have to select which type of radar as well as which type of mount you will need.

For me I had to select the proper mounting system for the 2 series as well as for the Escort Passport MAX. For me the proper information for the mount I got can be found below:

Name: BlendMount Radar Detector Mount for Escort Passport Max, European, BMX-2117

SKU:BMX-2117

Link: http://store.blendmount.com/blendmou...117-p1928.aspx

This can also be found on the site by selecting select your vehicle in the top bar, selecting BMW, click on 2 series. The correct one for our cars is BLENDMOUNT ID#-BMW-006. Under this there is a drop down where you choose your type of radar, between Valentine V1, Escort Passport MAX or other Escort detectors. In that same drop down you will also find the matching mirror tap.

Packaging:

Package arrived in a few short days and although expensive you can immediately tell your paying for quality items.

Steps:

1) Remove the cover of the part of the mirror that is attached to the windshield. To do this you will see that its split right in half. Use some kind of credit card starting from the windshield. Use the card to split this open. You may have to wiggle the 2 sides, for me one side really didn't want to come off but with some wiggling a fiddling eventually it comes apart and can be taken off.

2) You will now see many wires and such exposed like in this photo:

3) There are 2 connectors with wires coming out of them right by the stem of the mirror. You are looking for the larger which is also the lower one. Squeeze the sides and pull up to remove the plug. If you just tug at it straight up and back like opposite to the direction that its going into you can actually pull it out a but before unplugging it which makes it easier to unplug, just make sure that when your finished you push it back into where it goes.

4) Now you take the mirror tap wire, which has a red and black plug and plug it into where the wires feed into the plug. In this case the red plugs into the same port as the brown and green wire while the black (ground) plugs into the black and brown wire port. When plugging those in make sure you get as close to the wire that they share the socket with as possible. You'll feel it grab, make sure they go all the way in.

5) The manufacture instructions recommend that you zip tie the cable to some cables in there to keep if from getting pulled out but I didn't do this because I did not have scissors to cut the zip ties with me. I don't think its necessary but will help if you anticipate the cable being pulled, which hopefully won't be the case.

AS A SIDE NOTE I RECOMMEND THAT YOU TEST THAT THE CONNECTION WORKS BY CONNECTING YOUR RADAR AND TURNING ON THE CAR TO VERIFY YOU HAVE A GOOD CONNECTION. IF IT DOES NOT WORK TRY PUSHING THE CABLES IN DEEPER. ONCE EVERYTHING IS WORKING, GO AHEAD AND UNPLUG YOUR RADAR AND GO ON.

6) Feed the cable out the right side of where the housing will be when you replace it. When replacing the cover you will simply line it up with the mirror stem on either side and then line up the pieces and join them. This might take some fiddling but its not too bad. Also be sure that the wire which should come out of the right side won't interfere with any of the clips or anything in the cover.

7) The mirror tap is officially done. Now on to the blend mount.

8) First step is to loosen the part of the mount that holds the actual stem by loosening the bolt in the middle on the bottom of the mount quite a bit, you use the included tool for this.

9) You put it on the stem and push it as far forward as you can. Now using the tool tighten the screw almost all the way. Put your radar on the mount and make sure you like it up to face the right direction, we will take care of the angle of the radar next, just get it facing the right direction first.

10) Once this is correctly oriented finish tightening the screw that you tightened earlier until it is well secured but don't over tighten either.

11) Now we will loosen the screw on the right side of the mount and adjust our angle. Once this is done you tighten it back up.

12) Now take the wire that should be sticking out of the side of the mirror housing thing against the windshield and tuck it down so it sticks out towards the bottom so it looks a little cleaner an conceals more of the wire and then plug it into your radar.

13) Your now done! Here are some more pictures of the job done. Please feel free to message me with questions and concerns.

Great instructors thanks. Tried it on my 2018 M2, and could not get power but was using and older mirror tap from my previous car, so maybe they were not long enough? I have ordered the ones you used and will try it again.

I actually moved my setup to my M2 back in January and its working perfectly with the parts listed that I had on the M235 so it should work fine with the new cable.

I got the proper wire tap and installed again today, however when finished while both connectors clicked and seemed firm, I was getting intermittent power, if I pushed the commector a certain way, it would power on but when I let go it would lose power...

For the time being I went in the small connector above it (rain sensor power maybe) but this is hot all the time so each time I turn off the car I have to unplug my RD (have a Uniden R3) which is not ideal...

Any suggestions?

Hmm very strange. I'd reach out to the manufacturer of the cable and see what they suggest. Sorry that's happening.
