Red face Newb Question on winter setup

I have absolutely no clue on rim and wheel size, so I figured to ask the gurus here

Will this square setup fit and not screw up my 2017 m240i?

Moda M11, 18x8.5, ET32, 5-120
Michelin X Ice Xi3 245/45/18

Thank you in advance you addicts

You might have a bit of trouble getting a 245/45 tire and an 8.5" wide wheel up front without any camber adjustability.

Those offsets are a little on the low side for what seems to be the accepted setup most people go with. They'll probably poke a lot, and perhaps interfere with the fender. 35-38 in front and 38-50 in the rear is what most people go with. Refer to Apex's F22 Fitment Guide for more info on what most people run. I'm not saying it's impossible to get a 32mm offset to work...just that it's not a proven or common setup and might take some more work to get it right. Those last few millimeters can make a big difference and you might want to get camber plates, shave the wheels down a few mm, and/or roll the hell out of your fenders.

I have 225 square Michelin X-ice Xi3's for my winter setup on the stock wheels and I think the narrow setup is fine, and perhaps even preferable. You generally want narrow snow tires to cut through the slush anyway. I'd go with 225's on stock rims and put your money towards a wide and squared summer setup instead.

If you're on stock brakes strongly consider 17" instead.

Agreed - getting 17' wheels and tires for this winter now that my 18' winter tires are dead.

Thank you all! Yeah, I figured it would be wise to ask. For context, the setup was previously on a 550i - was seeing if there's any chance of me reusing them

If you're *really* determined to reuse your old wheels, you could probably have a machine shop shave down the wheel's mounting pads by ~3mm, install a set of Vorshlag (or similar) camber plates, and roll your front fenders. You probably also need to change to a 245/35-18 or 245/40-18 tire. A 245/45-18 would be way too tall.

Take a look at what your Owner's Manual says as a starter, and perhaps also ask your local BMW service department. Generally, most people seem to fit something like 7.5Jx17 wheels and 225/45-17 tyres the same all 'round ('square'). Some fit a bit smaller, some a bit larger. Larger (i.e. 8Jx18) probably precludes you fitting conventional chains and in the wet, of course, wider (235, 245 ...) isn't necessarily better.

I have had multiple sets of 17" wheels on my 135i, M235i and now for my M240i. I would not go any wider than 225 tire width, especially in the front. BBS SR probably the favorite wheel I've tried for winter.

For summer, I have two square set ups for my M240i -- a set of 17x8 and a set of 18x8 wheels with 245 width summer tires. They fit great but no room to spare inside or outside in front. 245s on 8.5 wheels are going to probably require camber or other adjustments.

Thanks for all the help ya'll! I'm looking currently at 17x8 et47 with 225/45/17 wheels, squared. I should be in the clear right? With clearing the brakes and not risk rubbing, right?

find any definitive answer on this set-up?

it seems that 8x17 and ET47 was fairly popular for older BMW OEM wheels. i'm seeing a good number of them on the used market and would love to pull the trigger for a winter set-up.

edit: also 8X17 with ET 34 seems to come up a lot as well...maybe standard for e90 wheels?

thoughts?

Ended up with 8x17 ET45 (TR C4 on Pirelli Sottozero 3) and they're perfect! They clear all the brakes
