oil query

When I change my oil (2016 M235i) I add seven litres. The used oil is down to 4 litres. The gauge tells me that it is full before the change. What gives?

YIKES!! You are missing 3 liters of oil.

Are you sure that you waited long enough during the draining of the oil? Starting with the oil filter removal, then moving down to the oil pan?

Here are the steps I take:
1. Remove the oil filter
2. remove the oil pan plug (waiting until a slow slow slow drip is detected)
3. install new oil filter
4. install new oil pan plug (f22 n20 uses a plastic plug)

If yes, then you need to make a trip to the dealer or a trusted BMW mechanic. Either the oil level sensor is bad, or you are burning oil, or leaking the oil.

I've been changing my own oil for 50 years and 8 BMWs. Guess I just don't trust an electronic sensor.

Were you on a significant incline? Either laterally or longitudinally? I have had variations in my readings (1/4-1/2 the min/max range) with what I consider a minor incline laterally. I unfortunately don't know what was in the sump though, because I was having changes under warranty.

Maybe a good amount of oil is still in the oil cooler circuit? Anyone here measure how much oil has come out during a change, other than OP?

From max, you should get at least 6 litres out. Sometimes tilting the car from side to side while it is draining can get up to an extra litre out.

The driveway is on a slight slant.
