Dinan Stage 1 .v1 and CEL's

I'm curious. How many owners who have the Dinan Stage 1 .v1, drive their car's in comfort mode and "D" and do not throw CEL's?

I am assuming that many of those with the .v1 module run their cars in "Sport" and the shift lever in the D/S (if a automatic) and are not experiencing any CEL's.

The reason I ask, I'm still running the .v1 tune on my 2017 M240i. I have NOT thrown a CEL in months. I run in Comfort mode, but now drive with the shift lever in the D/S position.

I discovered that if I run the car in Comfort and "D", It will throw a CEL about every 2nd or third start up immediately or after driving a short distance. The CEL clears after another 3 start ups but will return again after another couple of start ups.

If I run the car w/ shift lever in the D/S position, I don't throw any CEL's, ever.

I am surmising that the ECU is reading that selection and expects higher torque number to be recorded throughout the car's operating range since the RPM's are kept higher when D/S is selected, the ECU doesn't throw a CEL.

The .v1 produced a lot of torque early in the RPM range and I am thinking the ECU was reading the as abnormal and throwing a code when it saw this in Comfort mode and "D". Dinan's .v2 lowers the amount of torque produced and seems to have eliminated the CEL's regardless of drive mode and shift lever position.

I'm not a mechanic nor do I understand exactly how the ECU reads engine operating functions and determines proper operating range.

I do find it interesting that I've eliminated CEL's by picking D/S over "D". For sure the car is much more responsive in D/S and I notice RPMs to be higher when accelerating and braking. Applying some reason for this happening, best I can surmise is that the ECU is adjusting operating parameters when in D/S and not throwing a code.

I know from reading past posts regarding the Dinan Stage 1, many of the owners say they run their cars in "Sport or Sport +" all the time. I assume those with automatics also select D/S.

Just thought it was worth revisiting this again and see what other's experiences have been. Also for any still running the .v1 and getting codes, they may want to try the D/S each time they drive and see if the codes are eliminated. For those who run in "Sport or Sport +" and D/S all the time, try running comfort for a couple of days and see if you get a CEL. Just for fun.

I've had my stage1 v1 since 4/18. I have never had a cel come on. I drive in comfort 10% sport 60% sport plus 30%. The lever goes to the left probably 10% of the time. The only thing I don't like about the tune is the ferocity of the torque, wish it was a gradual build instead of the neck slam.

Hi,

My guess is that the CEL is triggered at cruising ... low revs etc. might trigger a CEL and with the lever to the left the revs are above the "critical" rpm range triggering the CEL

No CELs after my harness was changed out a ways back. Have they tried that or are they just replacing with the .v2 now instead?

I had the Stage 1 V1 on my 2017 M240i for over 2 years with the majority of driving in Comfort mode. Never had a CEL until the Dinan module failed and threw drivetrain malf's. Was replaced under warranty with the newer V2 that I'm happy with as well.

Never had a CEL over 18 months but did have to replace the harness - still on V1 and the car runs great - Just wish Dinan would get off their butts and do a flash - Since our racing season is coming to a close will leave it as is for now

I was doing fine with Stage 1 after I got the harness replaced last year. About 3 months ago I started getting CELs and occasionally Drive Train Malfunctions. Went to my Dealer, no issues found. Reset CEL. Now I get them constantly, reset, comes back in a few hours. 122532, 121201, 101F01. Called my Dealer, they were sold and new ownership is no longer DINAN. Called DINAN, advised to start service ticket. I inquired about Stage 2. Currently being calibrated/tested, hopeful for October. Does anyone know where a list of codes for the B58 might be?

By the way, I’m still on V1, only the harness was replaced.

I had a V1 and I had CELs. My BMW dealership replaced the harness once but it didn't help. They installed the V2 a few months later when it became available. No more CELs.

It seems to perform like the V1 although it feels a little less aggressive.

Good to hear

Well thats reassuring. The Dinan rep has been excellent, offered the V2 if I want. I may limp along untill October in hopes of Stage 2. I know, a lot of cynicism about the date of release being pushed really since last year. I have warranty untill next year.

USA-RET - I live in Sport and usually comfort. Makes no difference- I can drive like grandma or like Andretti, makes no difference, the CEL is almost random. The car never acts differently, I just get the light.

Last visit to my dealer, Dinan offered to swap mine for a .v2. Holding off to see about the Stage 2. If no Stage 2 before warranty end, I'll swap for the .v2.

Been following this for a while and finally decided to post as I couldn't take the issues with my v1 anymore. My car was shuddering quite often and towards the end, the CEL would rarely come off. Initially, it was intermittent and would only come on after a few drives, then disappear after several more.

Finally, I brought it to a Dinan dealership (different than where I got it installed) and they provided a new unit. I'm assuming it's the v2 but the guy didn't know. I don't notice much of a difference between versions, the v2 is still pretty quick. Maybe I feel like the v1 was a little more aggressive at times, but whatever I have in there now still puts a smile on my face and best of all no CEL's (going on 500 miles now).

I was hoping for Stage 2 like you USA-RET but gave up on my car performing like crap most of the time. Definitely happy I got it taken care of and excited to add a downpipe as my next performance mod.

Thanks for all your posts, they definitely helped me along the way.

I’m actually waiting in the very nice customer area at BMW of Warwick (RI) for
The replacement of my V1 with a V2. Hoping I get the same results!
While I never had an actual performance issue with V1, I got constant CELs. Dinan has been excellent throughout the issue (Daniel from Dinan - thank you). Warwick BMW seems really good also. My original dealer no longer supports Dinan, Warwick has come to the rescue.

60 days after purchase (11/2017) I had the BMW dealer install the Dinan Stage 1 V1, ACI and BMW’s MPE Exhaust on my new 2018 M240i. Unfortunately, I didn’t drive the car enough to really enjoy the go-fast goodies, only racked in about 2000 miles. When I did drive, she was a beast, absolutely no CEL’s observed.

4 months ago, I decided to get back into the SCCA Solo to breath some life into the garage queen. Since I wanted to start in SCCA Solo F Street (FS) Class, everything had to come off and the stock exhaust re-installed. I have to say now that I am driving the car in pure stock mode, the “driving experience” is similar to when I had the upgrades, the only thing I feel I am missing is the sound and maybe a bit of top end pull on the straights but when your dodging cones that is not really required.
