Why all this M2 talk? It will take years until it will be launched and the 2-liter i4 will be slower than tuned 3-liter M235i. The chassis will be the same 2-series. If there will be some useful parts at that time, you can just plug them to your M235i. M235i with its 3-liter I6 will be a classic. This is the last time you can purchase a small car with 3-liter engine. Next stops will be i4 2.0l and i3 1.5l. And after that you'll get electric motors.

Those are some depressing thoughts

There are some valid points.

I reckon you're right the M235i is a future classic, perhaps also the M135i

Actually I'm a very happy camper. I am able to buy a wonderful car, M235i, in a couple of months and it sustains its value in the future due to the more and more stringent fleet emission controls.

The value in the market, though, is not my concern, since M235i is one of those cars, that I'll keep as long as I live. Nevertheless, it will hold its usage value well - I'm very happy

If would be nice if BMW would make the M2 the new BMW sportscar instead of the M4. M2 has more potential if given the M4 engine and with all the CF tech. I know now that I'm not buying any other BMW, M2 is for me with I4 or S55.

Speechless, this is going to be one hell of a car.

The one in front of the diner is the best. The rest are just to over stylized. Definitely needs a six cylinder with choice of manual or M-DCT. Track junkies can go buy a go-cart if they want a 4 cylinder.

X1000 if weight is that important there are catheram on the market. M2 need to be the best of many world between a track day car, a gentlemen cruiser and a car you can use for road trip. 6cyl engine will be much better on the daily commute (where our car will spent most of their time). Even if BMW is trying to sell the lightweight 4cyl I'm sure that the m2 with a 4cyl won't be more than 150lbs lighter than the M235i. We have to remember than the m2 is their entry level m car don't expect too much light weight exotic material on it. So this car need a straight 6. This car also have to be confortable after all. Please BMW just make it a complete package like the 1M.

I think that jippii is absolutely right with his take on the future, but if BMW wants to go with the I4 Turbo they have to realize that our friends at AMG have already played that card. The only way to beat them is with a +350hp 10,000 RPM naturally aspirated I4 - this motor would get some headlines and a lot of press coverage! It would also differentiate the M2 from the plethora of I6 turbos already in the BMW line-up
CLA 45 AMG - In this discipline, the new AMG high-performance turbo engine can compete with the most powerful super sports cars. The AMG 2.0-liter turbo engine, with a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton meters of torque, is the most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production anywhere in the world.

Every render I see from this person (people?) just gets better. I love that this shows off the potential fender flares, really makes it look low and wide. I wonder if we'll see different mirrors for the M2?

Will it be possible to get that rear diffuser and a split rear exhaust in the m235i. Love the look of it, and an m2 is too far off to wait

This thing feels much more like a 3 series coupe successor than the 4 series coupe.

I will probably be going from my M3 to this if the production car looks anything like the renders.

The gap will also allow the new M3 and M4 breathing space.
OK. Hopefully BMW M manages to keep the M2 rather "desirably semi-raw", as explained in one of my posts of last Summer (http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...php?t=860846):

Undoubtedly the M2 will be a great car, but hopefully the large time window, large budget and mass production purpose, does not result into a conceptually "overproduced" (read: overly fine-tuned) design/concept. The complaint you sometimes hear about some Porsche cars: it is simply too perfect, flawless. The magic trick is to capture some sort of 'soul' or 'spirit' into the car that excites, offering you (the perception of) a great driving experience, the idea of an excellent "nexus" between car and driver.
But, for sure, BMW learned from the E46 M3 CSL and 1M experiences: also for commercial and image reasons, it definitely is worth to produce a special, (even) more staunch looking, version of an M car, and sell it in limited numbers. So it might be worth not jumping on the M2 boat straightaway, but to hold out for the M2 CSL ("2-Series M Coupé CSL" ? ). The latter might be the one to really look out for, for eventually getting (over)awed.
Check the enthusiasm at the dealership when you bring this rare bird (1M) in for maintenance. Guess who's the favorite/pet of the classroom most (if not all) techs/mechanics and managers want to treat ? So there is undoubtedly something special about the 1M, also amongst those in the know, some sort of aura/halo, that makes it a league of its own. Time will tell if BMW M can achieve to capture the same sort of magic with(in) the M2, or special versions of the M2. Some 1M pixie dust might be helpful.
Actually, from hindsight, the time and budget constraints turned out to be a blessing for the 1M. It ended up semi-raw - say "saignant" instead of "à point". There simply was no time and money enough ...to spoil it (softening and toning down its fairly spectacular aspects).
Or how an impromptu performance by the BMW M division resulted into a master piece, an instant classic, a motoring marvel that has set a new benchmark within its class. Let Dr. Kay Segler take off his helmet again and say "M2: now it's your turn".
