2018 vs 2019 m240i wheel fitment

I want to order some winter wheels and tires for my 2019 m240i xdrive coupe but tire rack doesn’t have specs for it yet. Does anyone know for sure that the wheel firment and clearances between the 2018 and 2019 are identical?

I drove my pilot sport as 3+ tires around Chicago last weekend and traction under 30 degrees was not their strong suit.

The vehicle is carryover platform. However, you don't want to use the OE specs for winter tires. Narrower tires are more successful in winter to cut through snow and concentrate more downforce on snow/ice. 215 or 205/50-17 (depending on load capacity and availability) are optimal sizes for winter for the 2 Series. Also suggest studless, not performance, versions, such as Michelin XIce xi3, not Michelin Alpin, or Blizzak WS80, not LM....studless are softer and you'll feel the handling change on dry pavement, but are superior for the reason you want them....on snow/ice. Xice xi3 probably best overall.

Thank you. I was just planning on a set of 17" wheels and 225/45/17s from Tirerack. Probably WS-80s since they worked so well on my Subaru last year. So it's probably safe to order from Tirerack using the 2018 as a fitment guide?

Yes, but 225 wider than needed or optimum for winter. Be sure 17" wheels you choose fit over blue MSport calipers if you have them. Tire Rack can advise. BBS-SR worked for me, for example.

Perhaps, but simple physics demonstrates narrower is even better. Why suboptimize for a new purchase for OP?

No one is driving in deep pow all winter. It's optimal for a narrow band of conditions, not your average day to day driving.

Actually doesn't need to be deep snow. By narrowing the contact patch even on packed snow or on ice, the downforce psi increases from a constant weight vehicle above, thereby improving traction. The ability to cut through deep snow is another benefit, when it occurs.

The trade off with narrower tires is dry traction and handling grip. We're arguing about maybe 5% more downward force.

Yes, agree, that is the trade-off, as I made a vaguer reference to earlier. Depends on one's philosophy for winter. I see it as something to survive intact, both for car and driver, and a downtime for more enthusiastic driving, so dry traction and handling grip aren't concerns then...I'm making the conscious sacrifice for maximum capability when the roads are not bare. I'll take every shorter foot of stopping distance possible, even if having to back off for dry winter driving. If one demands the "sportiest" driving style year around, reaching for maximum winter traction does pose a conflict.

Garage List
2016 BMW X3  [0.00]
2015 BMW M235ix  [0.00]
I am starting my fourth winter on 17" Blizzaks of the exact same size the OP plans to get. They have been great, though with some sacrifice in handling and ride quality over the summer 18"s, not a surprise.
The only hassle is dragging the set up and down to and from the basement every spring and fall. My mechanic has no room to store customers' wheels and the garage gets crowded quick.
There are lots of wheels compatible with these tires at TireRack. I bought dark gray Monte Titano, because they show the least dirt in winter. Get a set of wheel totes from TireRack while you are at it, well worth the $45 or so for four.

OP,

Give Discount Tire (DT) a look! I purchased four A/S Cooper tires and four 18" performance wheels for my WRX last winter. I saved about $200 by using DT over TD.

Wheel fitment & offset sizing are the same for 2018/2019 240i platform.

I plan to use DT when my '19 M240i xDrive arrives in March. I plan to purchase A/S tires, as I'm comfortable driving with A/S tires over the full winter sets...

GL/Cheers,

B

I honestly thought the Pilot Sport AS3+ would be enough tire for the mild snows we get here in Cincinnati but I was wrong. Until they warmed up the car was pretty unstable in even an inch of fresh snow. My work is too mobile for me to keep my car parked when things get super cold and white around here.

Discount tires. Michelin alpina 225 fronts 255 rears on stock rims. Bout 80$ to swap. Great tire. 1000$ for the rubber.

Discount Tire all the way! I've used them exclusively for the past 10 years except for one incident where my OEM RFT S001 had a serious bulge and I needed a replacement ASAP and only the dealership had it in stock. They also price match any lower price you find online.

I hate them in anything under 40 degrees. Read my recent post on it: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show...ighlight=dws06 The Conti DWS06 is a much better suited A/S for temps between 20-40 degrees. Not to mention how dang noisy the Michelin's are.

Yes, but OP needs winter tires. In Cincinnati with weather and topography, OP needs studless, square-set-up, narrow winter tires. Not staggered, not wide, not so-called "winter performance", not all season.

Good luck, OP!

Yes, I know this. But, he's got AS3+ currently on his car so I'm giving him the direct competitor which is much better suited for cold since the Michelin suck in sub 40. The AS3+ does not come OEM so he obviously bought them with "all seaon" in mind. The DWS06 is an option if he decides he doesn't want to go the second wheel/tire set up and have them taking up space in the garage.

I got the AS3s as part of my deal on the car. If you show up at a dealer two days before the end of year they will do nearly anything to get your business. The only thing I knew for sure was that the oem runflat pirellis were complete garbage and needed to go so I had it written in to order the AS3s and swap tires.

My last three cars were all Subarus with winter wheels and all season (three season in this case) wheels. I don't have a garage though and I can't transport another set of wheels in an m240i so I was hoping I could get alway with all seasons and safe driving. Doesn't feel very safe on our hills though so I'm going to have to figure out some logistics.

Well, other than being noisier, about which I think most agree, not everyone has the same opinion on Pilot Sport AS3+ for its performance as you do. For a more performance than luxury oriented car, such as we have, some still prefer the Michelin. That's all fine, preferences vary. But, for his climate and topography situation, DWS06 is not a reasonable option for year-round use. He needs dedicated winters. I know some Tire Rack approved local installers will store the off-season set, as I used that service for many years when I lived in a snow region in winter. Perhaps Discount Tire stores offer that as well?

The current forecast for Sunday night's low in Cincinnati is 2°. Under circumstances like that, I wouldn't want to be out on that city's hills with an all-season tire.

This is simply not true. The AS3+ is a fine performer in low temperatures. Every reputable review has given the tire high ratings, including those evaluations for cold weather handling. Three winters now I've been using them. To say that that they're any less competent in temperatures under 40 F than the Continental is nonsense.
