Expensive Moment of Inattention

I was crawling at <5 mph through the Costco parking lot at lunch today when my phone rang and as I answered it, at precisely the same moment the F150 in front of me stopped suddenly to let someone pull out from the Chick-fil-a in front of him and BOOM, my M235i stops upon hitting the protruding trailer hitch of his F150. Of course the F150 was fine with not even a scratch to the trailer hitch and my poor BMW has some extra ventilation in the front bumper. Arrgh! I can't blame anyone but myself for the brief moment of inattention. A quick look at Get BMW Parts shows a replacement OEM bumper cover at a bit north of $500 (non OEM isn't much cheaper), so with paint I'm probably looking at $750 for a reasonable quality repair. We'll see if the body shop I have done business with over the years has any other suggestions or can possibly save me a few dollars.

$250 to paint an entire front number? That's seems pretty low to me. I was quoted over $1000 to fix some fairly deep scratches (no bumper replacement). Now that was with mineral white so maybe that jacked up the cost. If it's really only $750 for a new bumper and paint job that would be pretty great.

Just had my bumper replaced by BMW last week.

I was backing out of somewhere and scratched it pretty bad. The dealer was going to try and fix it at first but then got a call and was told something about a non repairable piece on the back side of the bumper so a full replacement was needed.

My deductible was $500 but the total bill was just shy of $1400

Well, that's my hope anyway. My daughter's Hyundai had to have the bumper cover replaced a couple times and that's what the body shop I've used has charged in the past to paint and reinstall the replacement cover ($250-300). Of course the replacement cover for the Hyundai was under $150 too. I am sure the "best" shop in town or the one BMW would recommend would be a lot more $$, but the guy I use has always done a great job. I had him remove a small dent with scratch and repaint a section of my truck's driver-side door a few months ago and he charged $250. We'll see what he says when I take it by for an estimate next week.

One coat of paint and maybe it'll be $250 by Maaco, whom I'm assuming you wouldn't want doing the job. Remember that a flex additive has to be added into the paint otherwise it will flake. So you have prep, primer, 2 or 3 base coats of paint with flex, and clear coat along with labor hours. Any decent shop will charge you $600 minimum for the job.

I'd be shocked if you can get that fixed for under $1000. When I was rear-ended in my F32 a few years back the body shop charged the other person's insurance $1950 for an OEM bumper, PDC installation, and metallic paint match.

Sorry about that - could have happened to anyone.

I'm pretty sure that in some states it's illegal to drive around with a trailer hitch sticking out without a trailer attached - for obvious reasons! The sad thing is, some people leave them on for protection!

Sorry to hear you had an issue.

Now imagine if the guy in front of you had a Porsche or a Ferrari. How he'd feel about your moment of inattention.

How would you feel if you got tagged from behind by someone answering their cell phone or texting?

Was the phone call that important?

Expensive lesson for sure...and be thankful the vehicle you hit had the trailer hitch otherwise you'd be on the hook for that damage also.

If I sound a bit unsympathetic, it's because I am. I see so much distracted driving and fear I will be on the receiving end of that inattention. Drivers leaving their lanes on the interstate because they are fiddling w/ phones of whatever. I watch people get in their cars, start the engine and get on the cell phone as they start to drive..............insanity!

It's not just the repair bill, but the diminished value of the car that will affect trade in or re-sale. And for what, a fickin' phone call.

Bummer....I had a similar minor bumper penetration on my MINI. I used a local independent who specializes in "Minor Wreck" repairs. They removed the bumper cover, repaired it from the inside, sanded, painted and re-installed for about the amount you were quoted. I know where the damage was and cannot see it after the repair. You may want to ask your body shop if they can do a similar type of repair if your quoted bumper cover replacement/paint estimate "grows". Have you "tested" your front proximity sensors since the accident...that jolt may have caused some "hidden" damage. I think your quoted figure is quite low IMO. Good luck with the repairs! I love Glacier Silver...miss our F31 Sportwagon.

I believe it is illegal in all states to text or call while driving.

not many years ago I backed into blindly at a good clip into the front of my new 335i convert with the Walker mower.
Smashed out the gills and the front bumper...fortunately didn't touch the hood.
Sober to boot !
Stuff happens.
I recall $1200 to fix it all...back 2012 +-

This chart is eight months old, so some laws may have changed by now: http://www.ncsl.org/research/transpo...ving-laws.aspx.

That is very misleading and it's from 2017. Actually, 47 of the 50 states prohibited the use of cell phone unless hands-free and/or texting while driving to some extent. The only 3 without any regulations; Arizona, Missouri (over 21 years old), and Montana.

New OEM bumper cover, paint, and install will put you around $1,500.

Yah, your moment of inattention will be a little less costly than mine was back in early 2013.
What you learn is that things can go for a sheit real fast if you take your eyes off the ball for even a millisecond.
The good news for me was that my Subby was totaled and my insurance policy gave me full payout of my original purchase price.

What is very misleading in the document?

No, the phone call wasn't that important. I was on my lunch break running a few errands and had a few things on my mind. Not to excuse my inattention, but I wasn't texting (I know better) and I wasn't even picking up my phone. I literally glanced down at my steering wheel to push the bluetooth "answer" button on the steering wheel. It could have just as easily happened while glancing out my rearview mirror or up at the infotainment screen to see what radio station was playing. It happened just that quickly. I'm not looking for sympathy. I created the post to demonstrate how quickly an accident can happen, and yes that's why they are called "accidents".

Regarding repair costs, maybe I am just hopefully and unrealistically optimistic it will be under $1K. I plan to stop by my preferred repair shop next week and I will provide an update on the damage estimate and recommended repair.

FIY, park distance sensors are all fine. The only damage is the puncture from the trailer hitch. I don't blame the guy in front of me for having his hitch attached. In my area of the world that's very common. In fact I have a hitch sticking out of the back of my truck's hitch receiver.

Sorry if I came across harshly. I have a thing about cell phones and how their proliferation has impacted our society especially road safety (not to mention how inconsiderate people can be in public w/ one in-hand 100% of the time).

I agree that accidents do happen, but had your phone not rang or you chose not to answer it while driving, or you had a bit more room between you and the truck, you'd not be looking at upwards of $1K in damage and a potential insurance premium increase.

I had one accident many years ago (the 60's). I was following a car too closely in heavy traffic 20 MPH and looked down to change a radio station in my 1967 Impala. He stopped, I didn't and Bam! Expensive lesson but a significant life lesson too.

To this day, I do not tailgate nor follow cars closely in traffic (or parking lots). I probably allow more "cushion" than necessary, but at least I know I have ample reaction time should I need it. I find myself cringing when I see cars within a half car length of another doing 35 MPH or faster.

Nuff said. Hope you get the damage repaired w/o costing an arm and leg.

The bumper cover can be repaired for about $100 and the paint (whole cover) should be about $500. You won't replace the bumper cover and paint it for under $1200.
