Hello Team,

Need to replace the wheel bearing due to hitting a curb and getting humming noise (wishbone already replaced).

I notice the knuckle pinch is a way up the strut, with the strut blocking access to one of the wheel bearing bolts.

My friend was saying is this as part of BMW's "planned failure", he said in hard impact the strut is meant to allow the knuckle to travel up the strut to act as a fuse to stop damage further up and in that situation you should change the knuckle, strut and bearing. We are just DIY guys so not experts by any means.

But only one side hit a curb yet both sides have the strut lower covering the wheel bearing bolts.

So is it normal position or is that the "BMW fuse"?

Would anyone with a 235i care to check theirs for me please?

Plus I did take the car for a drive after changing the wishbone and other than humming from the bearing i did not notice any issues, car went in and out of drive modes fine (sport, comfort, etc).

If its not damaged, i plan to lower the knuckle just enough to get to that last bearing bolt (maybe need to lower by about 3-4 inches), but when i go to push the knuckle back into its original place i see no form of "stop" as in no collar or some form of metal tab to stop me pushing it too high?

I know i can mark with a paint marker, but i thought there might be some form of hard stop once the knuckle pinch is at the correct height along the strut.
