2016 228i xDrive Potholes
So I’ve just blown out my 3rd run flat in the past 10 weeks... I live in upstate New York (near Albany) with terrible roads / pot holes.... I’ve been running Pirelli 225/40 R18 92V CintuRato P7 all season tires.
I’m tired of running to the tire shop to replace blown tires...looking for a longer term solution! I’m even ready to buy a whole new set (4) of Winter wheels/tires to swap (and have summer wheels and winter wheels)... I’d err on the side of winter time reliability (with diminished performance). What would you recommend for wheel size (I’ve “heard” that going with a smaller wheel and longer sidewall may be more durable) and tire? Thx |

If you go to 17 inch you will have a larger sidewall protecting you against blowouts. But maybe the run flat pirellies are prone to blow outs.
So maybe 235/45-17 with good all seasons on 8/8.5-17 wheels |

i'm having same issue on crappy DC-area roads. see my thread on this topic as well:
https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1576311 i'm going with 16X7 set-up and have confirmed with tire rack that the alutecs will fit over my standard brakes and rotors. if you have m-sport brakes and rotors then you cant go smaller than 17" wheels. unfortunately my wheel & tire purchase was delayed when i received a love-tap on my bumper from an inattentive drive in DC. damage is minimal but DC is no fault, so i'm paying for the fix out of pocket -- at BMW collision center as i type this. wheels and tires next month.

I blew out 2 RFT sidewalls in less than 6 months so I ended up swapping out to non-RFTs about 3-4 months ago and won't look back. I should've learned from my last E92 335i when it happened twice and I swapped out to non-RFTs on that car. Go non-RFTs and carry a spare tire, scissor jack, and breaker bar for long road trips. We have roadside assistance so might as well make use of it if need be when you're in town.

if his commute and roads are anything like mine, then he shouldn’t give up run flats regardless of the wheel/tire sizing. there’s no way in hell I want to be changing a tire on the side of any of these roads. my run flats have gotten me safely to the dealership / shop every time. the ride on the P7s isn’t bad...and they’ve only given up the ghost to the worst of the worst potholes or expansion joints.

I’m certainly leaning towards a run flat solution. I’ve had a blowout at midnight on Vermont back roads and was able to limp home (and to the dealer’s the next day). Another time was during rush hour traffic (cold and dark) and was glad to be able to limp home...
Happyjack: I’m very interested in how your set up works out... sorry to hear about your fender bender... understand that this is slowing down your implementation :-( |

Don't move to Cleveland
Cleveland has the worse potholes. I've ruined two run-flats in two years. I have Michelin S4's for the summer but use run-flats in winter. After last blow out had to buy four tires and against my philosophy actually bought tire road hazard insurance for them. I was impressed that tire had huge hole in sidewall and i was able to keep driving and the car actually didn't feel too bad.

i did not end up buying the tirerack set. when my son heard me talking about new wheels, he reminded me that we had previously discussed new wheels on the '06 E90 that he drives. i had a light-bulb moment that has not yet evolved into a full plan, but i'm going to execute over the summer.
the '06 E90 is running OEM 16x7 style 156 wheels....and at least from what ive found online, they should fit on my F22. does anyone think i'll have issues with ET34 on these wheels? and then i'll be looking for a 17x8 5-spoke OEM wheel -- that's what my sons is thinking about right now any way -- to put on the E90. something like this: i survived the rest of the winter without anymore issues, but come november 2019, i'll be running winter kicks...

I agree with ditching RFTs. I live in the NYC area and must have gone through 2-3 tires a year with my old 2015 335 on RFTs. Since I got my 240 with summer/winter performance tires, no pothole has claimed a wheel or tire, and I hit a couple decent size ones. RFTs are just too stiff and don't provide the flex needed to absorb the impact.

Looks like happyjack and razzback have/(will have) 17” wheels... I presently have the 18” RFTs and was looking at going to non run flats (for next winter) with 16” wheels.
What do you think about 17” vs 16” (for the non run flats)? Looking for winter durability (vs performance)... also, what are you all doing for an emergency spare (donut)? Will most likely keep my Pirelli RFT 18” for summer |
