No it won't be "Legal for use" in CA. Pretty much nothing is these days.

Hell, even an oil catch can is deemed illegal because it is sold as a Competition Use Only item.

So what has changed so drastically that "nothing is street legal these days". Haha and are there ways around it ...

Sure there's ways around it, and I've used them.

1) Have an out of state friend buy for you and then ship to you. Install at your own risk.

2) Remove and replace with stock equipment when you take the car in for smog. May also be a good idea if you take it in for warranty service if for no other reason that they don't deny your warranty issue because they try to tell you it was caused by an aftermarket part. Unless it can be shown that the failure was caused by the aftermarket part, they can't deny warranty, but they may still make life difficult for you.

It sure isn't a looker... but more importantly is performance, price, and sound. More options is certainly better, however a little more eye candy would have been welcome.

Just saw this, and it's made we wonder what laws there are against doing what CARB doesn't want you to do. The reason I'm wondering is I tangled with them back in the 80s, and they held up the registration of my M6 for an entire year. At this late date, I imagine that crowd is even more unpleasant than it was back then.

There's nothing new going on - it's a very heavily-regulated state. Most of the residents don't seem to mind, though.

What surprises me is that CARB hasn't declared all aftermarket parts to be unacceptable. Call me cynical, but perhaps that would shrink their bureaucracy.

I think a lot of it was driven by the horrible smog in LA. With the emissions standards now it's much more under control than say back in the 70s / 80s. But the certification process dues seem to be lengthy and onerous.

You're exactly right. Smog in LA in the during the 50s-70s was really awful, and something had to be done.

Quite a bit of progress had been made by the late 80s. At that time, CARB dictated that 10% of new cars sold in the state in 2000 would be EVs. They were ahead of their time, but that target should be met within a few years.

+13 HP, not bad!

I've been wondering, with all the technology going into modern engines, how could a manufacturer leave 13 HP on the table of something as simple as a less restrictive intake?

Either there is some compromise to the Injen intake (cost, serviceability, reliablity) or Injen is full of BS. Or, perhaps more likely, I need some education. Can someone enlighten me?

I always wait for independent customer dyno but the logic you are using is invalid.

Its like saying the claims made by tuners are BS or dangerous or else BMW would have done it themselves

Manufacturers do not offer max performance because they are not building a race car. They are more concerned with cost and MPG

Hi Mike, I think my logic is sound and you may have confirmed it. If the intake costs too much and lowers the MPG, then those would be the compromises I was speaking of.

Those are compromises people who tune their cards are OK with. Compromise doesn't equal bad! Maybe I should have phrased my statement as "trade-offs".
