deeper wheel cleaning

I’ve owned the car for about 6 months, and there’s stuff on my rims that won’t come off with regular wheel cleaner. I was thinking of trying clay, different wheel cleaner, or some fallout/iron remover. Anyone have a good suggestion? I purchased the vehicle used from a dealer, and the wheels were spotless, anyone know what they do? Thanks

If you have the ability, I would really recommend taking the wheels off the car.

You will be able to really let the product of your choice dwell, and scrub, and dwell and scrub. You will then be able to scrape off any tar chunks that get built up in there as well.

Usually, this is faster for me too. Allows so much extra room without having to resort to specialized wheel cleaning brushes. Only takes 5 minutes to jack the car up one side at a time safely and pull the wheels off.

Sonax PNS is AMAZING for the paint, never thought of using it for rims--will have to try it out!

This is a great alternative to having them ceramic coated. I have done this for years. Two coats of a polymer sealant will last over a year depending on the wheel cleaner you use and how aggressive your brushes are.

Prep work is key in both instances though.

Good points, especially regarding prep. The wheel needs to be as squeaky-clean as you can make it.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the Sonax product is chemically similar or equivalent to some of the ceramic products.

I put a single coat on my Apex track wheels in July, ran them at two track events using very aggressive race pads, cleaned them thoroughly after each event, and even after the second event the water still beaded-up as I was rinsing off the wheel cleaner. They're put away for the winter now, but I think I'll follow your lead in the spring, put two coats on them, and then see how long it lasts.

The payoff so far has been that the race pads' brake dust came off the Sonax a lot easier than it did the clear coat that came on the wheels from the manufacturer, saving me quite a bit of time and effort.

Iron X. You should consider something that'll oxidize the industrial runoff.

And consider ceramic coating the wheels if you're going to take them off for cleaning. I applied CarPro DLux to my refinished 437Ms and the pressure washer takes off 90% of the dirt during my weekly maintenance wash.

i'm gonna recommend meguiars wheel brightener. its cheaper than the other brands mentioned here, by a lot. $28 for the concentrate gets you 5 gallons worth of cleaner on amazon.

you will not have to worry about it damaging your wheels.
