Sorry if this topic has been discussed, I had my 240i for 10 months now and wanted to get everybody's opinion on the looks of this car.

What do you like/dislike about it?
What can be improved?
Your rating out of 10?

For me, I'm not too crazy about the front end, I actually prefer the looks of previous gen 3/4 with the "connected kidney grill" and aggressive wide stance.

I'd give the looks a 6.5/10

Compared with an Aston Martin Vantage it rates 0/10, compared with a Chrysler Minivan it rates 10/10. Both in my opinion, styling is totally subjective.

I don’t know about that...that upturned D-pillar on the Chrysler Pacifica is quite swoopy! Our 2 Series doesn’t even have a D-pillar!

I have an M2, but I think the 2er in general is one of the better looking BMW's of this generation, for a couple reasons.

1) Normal sized grills
2) Sharp body-lines, but not over-styled
3) Understated and simplistic styling, but still somewhat aggressive (especially in M/M-Sport-form)
4) They fixed the hunchback design of the 1 series by elongating the roofline towards the c-pillar.

Improvements that could be made?
1) Better hood-line
2) Cooler taillights?

Honestly there's a lot I really like about the design and find it will age really well, my only main dislike is the hood-line.

I love everything about the exterior apart from the rear which I think is plainly ugly

From the side, I think the nose looks a little short and it actually looks a bit tall for the overall length. But I love that the front does not look like the new 4 series concept; that thing is awful.

Personally, I still like the look of the E46 especially from a side view; I remember standing back and looking at the car after I’d washed and waxed it and thinking, damned, it sure looks good!

I'm not sure what Hooydonk is getting at with the new 4 concept hideous front end “to have an eye catching look”, but it sure gets your attention.

That's one thing that I like about the 2er it reminds me of an E46 in both driving and styling. This photo of an M2 and M3CSL really showed me how similar the two were, seems kind of like a modern version of the E46 design.

1) My impression is very general: the car looks like a BMW; and, maybe because I've owned a bunch of them, it looks just fine to me. I have no dislikes about the car's exterior appearance.

2) I have no opinion about that

3) 5.0

My overall point of view on this subject is that almost all of the time I'm engaged with the car I'm in the driver's seat and don't see the exterior. My focus is on the car's driving dynamics. That's the reason I bought the car and the reason I've spent quite a bit on improving those qualities.

I feel like I'm driving the coolest car on the road, always. Love the way this car looks.

for what it is, for the price I got it for, and compared to it's competitors in its price range... 10. Biased of course lol.

Thanks for that photo. It clarifies what I don't like about the current 2 series, which I regard as borderline ugly at 5 / 10, while I think the M3CSL is almost gorgeous at 8. I used to think the problem with the 2 was the rear, but now I see the rear is not really the problem. It's the imbalance. The B pillar forward looks like it belongs on a much longer car, whereas the front of the M3, while only marginally different, matches the similar rear much better, to my eye.

BMW has made a coupe with a short rear deck in the past. Years ago, I tried to convince my wife to get a 318ti. She did not. I left her some time later, though not over the car.

The 2er looks great in ragtop form. The back end could have a better light design, but overall, I'd give it a 8.5/10.
BTW, I'm on my 3rd 2er ragtop (2015 228xi, M235xi & 2018 M240xi).

+1 In fact just this weekend my wife tells me "You just love driving this car. Every time you're behind the wheel you have this big grin and scoot around like you're Mario Andretti." Only Italian driver she knows.

M2 here, but I really like the looks. The large rear fenders are probably my favorite but wish the car was slightly less tall. It's really my only nitpick.

What do you like/dislike about it?

Convertible owner, with the top up, the rear lines are not as clean as the Coupe....

But when you drop the top, appearance wise the M240i takes on a different look, fantastic and real clean.

The very same rear lines that look "meh" with the top up, pop with the top down. When the top is down the car gets attention from the Estoril Blue Metallic with Black Interior combo.

What can be improved?

If I had to point at one item, or in this case 4 of them, I am not satisfied with the looks of the OEM black rims, need to be more aggressive looking.

Your rating out of 10?

Top Up - 7.0

Agreed. I never got tired of looking at my E46. In fact I still look at pictures I took of it. I first started liking BMWs with the E36 though I never owned one.

I sold my E46 to my brother-in-law so I get to see it every time I go to their house. Funny story, he was having starting issues early on. It’s a 5 spd MT and I had replaced the clutch stop with an adjustable one so that the clutch engagement was quicker. Turns out, the stop had unscrewed out so that the kill switch was not being turned off. He’s having fun driving the MT.

I find the looks of this car being very dependent on color and type (coupe or convertible).

I do not find the convertible to look good, either top up or top down. The lack of roof makes the belt line too high and the car too plain looking. Top up, it looks terrible. These cars need to be longer and wider to make the convertible look right. Perhaps some sort of roll bar.

This car needs all the help it can get to pop the fender lines and creases. The dark colors really hide all of that and can make the car look narrow, flat, tall, and pretty dang boring. Black is the worst. It kills all visual presence and makes the wheel gaps appear larger than they are because the black body brings out the brown in tires. This is a problem with all black cars.

The best colors to bring out the body lines and aggressiveness are mineral white, silver, and alpine white in a distant 3rd. The metallic nature of mineral white does an exceptional job at shadowing the body creases, pumping up the fenders, and giving the car more visual width. With my Alutec Drive wheels, the car is constantly mistaken for an M2, except when seen from the rear

I am really considering a bigger rear spoiler as it seems this makes the rear to look more attractive
