What engine oil viscosity to use on BMW M240i?

Hi guys,
I was wondering what engine oil viscosity you guys use on the 2017 BMW M240i?(The one that manufacture suggest) I know its different than the M235i. Any other M240i owner use different kind of viscosity rather than the recommended one?

-Thank you

I'm still debating on this. I went to the German dealer and they said 5w-30. I look under the hook and the sticker says 0w-30 (or 0w-20, can't remember). The iDrive Manual states both 0w-30 and 0w-20 but also says the 20 is for specific engines. It also list some 5w-XX in there so I'm all over the place with which. I think I'm going to get what the sticker says under the hook and be done with it (it's getting into winter so 0w might not be the best, still researching).

Interesting, so I guess either 0w20, 0w30, or 0w40 is okay?

The connecteddrive Manual says 0w-20/0w-30. But then it lists some 5w-30 and couple others. I'm thinking 0w-20/30 would be the go to because the sticker says 0w-20, manual suggests it, and the mobil1 bottle I bought says good for both 0w-20/30 engines where there's high heat/high performance.

I am probably going to go 0w20 on my first oil change. How many quarts does the engine need for the M240i? I cannot find it in the owners manual. Thanks.

It's supposed to be 7qt, but mine took 6.25qts and the digital gauge says it's right at max so I'd say 6qts will do, but having a 7th for a slight tipoff wouldn't be a bad idea. I used 0w-20 mobile one

It doesn't matter what brand of oil you use, as long as it meets BMW recommended specs, they have no grounds for any shady dealings with your warranty. The manual says what it needs to meet. I'll take a picture of what I used tonight when I get home from work.

Mobil 1 changed their formula and is no longer an approved oil for BMW

Might work just fine but there's zero chance most people are putting an unapproved oil into a vehicle thats under warranty

Despite what jpnh says, I have always used Mobil 1 full synthetic oil and have never had any issues with it. I used this: https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/m...d-fuel-economy

It was the only 0w-20 oil that the Exchange stocked at the time (not sure if they have others now or not) over here in Germany. It was either I buy that, or I go off base and spend 15 Euro per quart of some 0w-20 oil brand I've never heard of. I already had to spend 20 euro for the filter from the bmw dealer so I was 1) trying to keep costs done some 2) sticking with a brand that I knew was good.

Joe,

I've used and continue to use Mobil 1 in various vehicles for many many years but the simple fact of the matter is that they recently changed their formula....

Go ahead and put your new BMW into the selector and tell me which oil they suggest for new bimmers?

https://mobiloil.com/en/product-selector

This subject has been beaten to death already

Use Mobil 1 at your own risk

I cant afford to blow a motor and have a warranty claim denied by BMW due to non spec oil being used and I suspect most people are in a similar position

Talking Confidence in Knowing My OIL OF CHOICE MEETS:

The ACEA B4 performance requires an outstanding detergent/dispersant power and a better viscosity increase resistance due to soot produced by Direct Injection .

The BMW Long Life-01 specification imposes severe constraints to the lubricant particularly due to the Valvetronic system.

GM-OPEL Diesel LL B-025 standard requires two main properties from the lubricant: high HTHS and very low volatility to drastically decrease oil consumption.

The MERCEDES MB 229.5 standard is more stringent than 229.3 in terms of ageing and oil film resistance (extended drain interval: on-board computer), detergent/dispersant power (ACEA B4) and requests fuel economy performance: 1.7% fuel economy improvement versus a 15W-40 reference. .

The Porsche A40 standard requires extreme high shear resistance from the lubricant.

The FIAT 9.55535-H2, M2, N2 and Z2 performance levels impose the engine oil to combine both ACEA A3/B4 standard and 5W-40 viscosity grade in order to perfectly lubricate most of the Gasoline and Diesel engines of FIAT, ALFA-ROMEO, and LANCIA produced before July 2007, especially Twin Turbo Diesel engines (FIAT 9.55535-Z2).

PSA has developed B71 2296 standard in order for the oils to provide high thermal stability and insures an outstanding resistance at high temperatures to avoid black sludge and viscosity increase that soot, coming from combustion residues, may create.

Hey Joe240,

Have you had the chance yet to take a picture of your engine oil measurement on your BMW M240i?

It's okay. Looks like my car is at the same max level as yours and good to go. Took your advice and put in 6 bottles first and add if necessary and it was already at the max line with 6 bottles already. Thanks a lot man!~ Appreciate it.
