BMW wheel & tire protection plan

Hi guys,
I just purchased my M235i today... anyways, as I'm finishing up with paperwork, they offer me the BMW wheel and tire protection plan. It's a full warranty, no questions asked for wheel damage, and tire damage including flats. Who has it? What's it worth? and Who can get me a proper deal on this? I'm in the Tri state area. Thanks... LOVE the car so far!

I've always found these to be major ripoffs for cars. Its nice for peace of mind, but I have never been in a situation where I would need that, and I live in Chicago where potholes and awful roads are abundant.

However, I did do the wheel and tire package for my motorcycle, but that was only $400 for 3 years, and that alone is the price of one tire. Figure that was worth the price.

I got it as well, although I kind of regret it. I have awful luck with my tires finding nails, so I figured it wouldn't be bad...

I guess we will see if I ever am able to use it. Somehow I think it's going to screw me over as if I get a nail and they replace that tire when they are at 1/2 tread with, I would have to buy another tire... So I'm guessing I'll have to buy the other tire prematurely, which in the end probably wouldn't save me any money.

Make sure you understand when the Road Hazard conditions apply and do not. I was not able to use my wheel insurance when I ran over a concrete block on I-81. They said it was a collision not a road hazard and I had to collect on my Auto Insurance. My insurance company covered both wheels and tires and did not charge me for the incident because several cars in front of me also hit it. I had an incident report from the NY State Police to back it up.

You are not really correct about no questions asked. The biggest problem is curb rash on our wheels. They will not cover curb rash. That includes both the tires and the wheels.

Also tires are a little under $200 each mounted and balanced.

I never found that the insurance was worth it.

I got it when I purchased my 335 because I was able to get the same coverage from the same company that BMW uses via a 3rd party seller very cheaply ($350 for 5 years).

I bent a wheel on a pothole one winter. That wasn't covered (the wheel still held air, even though it was so out of round it could not be balanced). It also didn't cover a wheel that got curb rash.

After 5 years, I finally used it just before it expired, replacing two bubbled tires (I was on GoFlat tires at that point). Having the insurance covered the $340 tire cost. So, at the end of the day, they kept my money for 5 years, didn't cover two damaged wheels, then ultimately gave me back all but $10 of it.

FWIW, I didn't get it for my M235.

The plan I purchased from BMW definitely covers curb rash and any cosmetic damage. I was also able to negotiate the cost to about half of what they initially quoted. I'm only 5 months into ownership so time will tell if the cost was worth it, but I like the peace of mind.

BMW plans do not cover curb rash. Someone gave you false information.

It specifically states in the contract they will pay to repair cosmetic wheel damage up to a $600 maximum.

The damage must be caused by a road hazard. A curb isn't considered a road hazard.

get non-run flat tires and you'll never need the warranty

Not true at all. Run flats tend to bubble in the side walls. I had to replace them on my last BMW.

Dude, it covers everything. There's no fine print or asterisk that says curbs not included. Maybe you got/heard of a different package that has all these exclusions. Even if curb rash was somehow excluded, are they videotaping my wheels at all times? How will they know what caused a scrape on my wheel?

Seems like his dealer was being a bit of a douche, so I'm not sure if that's the norm. There's nothing in the contract language that tells me otherwise so I'll raise hell if they deny me. I guess I'll find out once I hit a curb! Very funny with this type of insurance, you try so hard to avoid having to use it but somehow feel ripped off if you don't get to.

Yea I regretted getting this a few hours after I signed the papers. They sprung it on me while signing the contract and didn't give me much time to think about it. I would have rather put the money into options than this lame warranty. I have some small rash on my left front wheel, but I don't think that is covered.

No, not at all. They were pretty clear about it upfront. See item "D" in the "What's Not Covered" section for the curb rash info (they also seem to be missing a "not"). The real hook was less what's on the two page section that I signed, it's more what was in the fairly extensive small print contract language that was attached. This contract was also just for "Failure", with no cosmetic benefits.

Now, this was what they were selling in 2009 when I purchased my 335. Things may have changed.

Gotcha, looks like we have completely different protection plans then. I read all the fine print and it pretty much goes out of the way to note that cosmetic damage is included up to a $600 max (which likely works out to 3-4 'fixes').

I purchased it on my 08' 335xi, which kept the stock 17" rims and run flats, and paid $1200. Over the 4.5 years I've had the car I've gone through 5 tires and 3 cracked rims so it definitely paid for itself. Most of the damage happened hitting pot holes on i95 doing 70. I'm leasing a new m235i and the dealership is offering it for $2k for 5 years (i'm planning on buying the car at the end of the lease and it was a $100 difference between 3 and 5 years). They said so long as the tires and wheels stay within spec they're covered for everything except cosmetic damage. I'm going to try to talk them down from $2k but I definitely got my money's worth on my 335xi so I'm strongly considering it for this car. Again though your results may vary...
