Coding out cold start routine on *40i
Sorry, I have searched the sub-forum but can't see a clear answer to this.
Is it possible to code out the noisy cold start routine on the M240i and other cars with the B58 motor ? Very irritating at 5 in the morning, even with the stock exhaust. I read the noise is due to the wastegate being open. Is that right ? |

I recently had my istep updated to the latest 18-03-×××
There were a number of changes I noticed which included the cold start being so quiet. Very noticeable change. |

There is an option in Bootmod3 to turn the cold start off.

Things like this are a reason I will never live in a development that has HOA.

Is feathering the throttle right after startup to quieten the noise detrimental to the car in any way? I have a nosy HOA as well and if I get a midpipe I fear I'll have to do this every morning.. |

The reason bmw codes this start up process is to protect the turbo from low oil pressure at start up. The DME revs the engine to 1200 rpm to get the oil pressure up to snuff quickly. The waste hate is open so that there’s no demand on the turbo.

thanks for the explanation! I figured there had to be a good reason for it. so it sounds like coding this out or turning it off could be a bad thing for the car.

Incorrect. Cold start warms up the catalytic converter quicker, thus increasing it's efficiency and reducing emissions.

In or Out of Garage
Stupid question I know, but for those of you with garages in their townhomes, do you pull in or back out? I leave between 0545 and 0600 every morning and am trying to be cognizant of the neighbors. I just picked up an M240i with MPE and the bass is quite noticeable upon cold start, so I always throw it into gear a second or two after startup to get it to quiet down per the info in this thread. I've been pulling in with the assumption that it will echo less, but I got to thinking this morning that maybe the garage will soak up most of it. I haven't had a chance to test them both out as the cold start sequence is not an issue in the afternoon.
