Tire brand recommendations
Hey guys, it’s almost time for me to get new tires so I’m wondering if you could share your feedback about brands/tires you like. I currently have Michelin PS/AS4. Only looking at all seasons because I’m from the Midwest and the weather is crazy here(-20 with wind chill up to 90) thinking about trying Pirelis Pzero AS+3 or Continental DWS06+
I’m also on stock 7.5 F 8 R wheels, but might get 8 or 8.5 all around soon if that makes any difference. Thanks |

I'm in Minnesota so I also wanted all season tires. I went with Bridgestone Driveguard Plus and so far they have been great, though last winter we didn't have much snow so they didn't get a full workout. They are quiet, and great in rain. Got 24k miles on them so far and they seem to be wearing well.

I also just installed Driveguard Plus on my wife's car, but we are in the desert southwest. So far, very pleased. If you get cold temperatures but little snow, the best all seasons might suffice. If you get more than light snow, even the best all seasons cannot stop/turn as well on snow/ice (especially for anything unexpected) as either all weather tires (such as Michelin CrossClimate2) or a set of actual winter tires. They may get you moving, but that is the least important of the three things a car does....go/turn/stop. The only actual benefit all seasons give you in Wisconsin is that they are capable in the cold "shoulder seasons" before/after the snow is on the roads. You won't want to have them on the day someone else loses control in your path on snowy or icy roads.

I would keep the stocks for winter tires, 225 all around? Or keep staggered 225/245 with winters too? |

For winter, 225 is optimal. Narrower winter tires cut through snow better with more downforce. Do not stagger for winter. The unequal tread width will result in the rear breaking loose first on snow/ice and cause oversteer. For winter, all four corners should be the same tire. To make this easier if you get a second set, some Tire Rack approved installers store your off-season set so you just can roll in for 20 lug nut pit stops twice a year.

I have been driving in Minnesota winters for 47 years. While dedicated winter tires have an undeniable advantage, you are not sure to die if you stick with all seasons. I got really tired of the hassle of switching out dedicated winter tires so when the summer stickers wore out, I went with the Driveguards. I have zero concerns about winter driving on them. I've survived many Minnesota winters on far worse tires. That said, if Cross Climates came in an RFT I would have bought them.

I have run the DWS06+ in the past for a full winter albeit a mild winter and just decided not to swap the winter tires on that year as the DWS06+ were brand new. I prefer a dedicated winter or all weather tire that time of year, but the DWS06+ functioned perfectly well.

Stay with Michelin PS/AS4. They are the best. I have a staggered set up and do cross axle rotation every 3.5K. I keep them at the recommended pressure 38/45. I am at my second set and would never install anything else.

DWS 06 works year round for me. But then on especially snowy days the wife has an X3. Retirement is great. The original Pirellis were not so good.

Given where you live and the limitations of any A/S tire, what do you do now after a 6-12" or greater snowfall – wait for your travel routes to be plowed and then keep on trucking?

I drive right on the snow covered roads like a rally driver! I’ve lived in Wisconsin long enough to have gained that skill lol

My area's road works are on the ball. We usually don't see more than a couple inches on the road at a time, and RWD is more than fine. My commute is country roads and have missed/late 1 day a year on average.
So far I've only got stuck once driving RWD in an unmaintained parking lot where the snow was above the undercarriage. Still prefer 2 sets of tires/wheels personally, even with the weak winters. |

I have Michelin PS/AS4, though in North Carolina, so not a harsh cold winter. I have a staggered set up on 2018 M240ix. Its is my wifes car, but I drive it more, my other car is a Porsche 981 Cayman S Manual.
I bought this car on BAT and the owner was in Tampa FL, and put on these new tires for the sale. I have been very impressed, and at the same time, not surprised. I had Michelin PS4's on my 911 997 Carrera S and those were the best tires on any performance car I have owned, and tracked, bar none. We were up in the mountains in July, and I ran the M240ix like a I stole it to see what it limits were and true handling dynamics, and not only is and M240ix a great fun car to haul butt in the twisties, long sweepers and hairpins, but these tires did not disappoint, and they were all seasons, I was blown away how good they were. Also great traction and stopping in heavy rain at highway speeds, super well planted. The Porsche Cayman S I have, the previous owner had on Conti Extreme Sport2's, and those are also very good, though they see a lot more hard driving, I would say they a bit less stiff sidewall than the Michelin PS'4 were on the 911, but thats not apples and apples really car wise and front/rear load and weight transfer. I just bought 2 new Contis for the rear of the Cayman, as I figure this fall the rears will be close the wear bars by Nov. Fronts are great. But if I had to buy 4 new tires tomorrow for the Cayman, I would buy the Michelins PS4's, and If I had to buy new tires tomorrow for the M240ix, I would continue to have the Michelin PS A/S. When I lived in Chicago, I had a BMW E90 2007 335i 6 speed, and had a winter set of 17's and Blizzaks, and for a rear drive car, those Blizzaks were the bomb, could drive in a 6" snow and stop on a dime. Dedicated winter snow tires are a HUGE difference to All Seasons, even on a SUV. Minnesota seems like you should have winter snow tires, slap on Nov 1st and take off April 15th ish...
