Something fun BMW shop clock

Name: 20201112_211830.jpg
Views: 735
Size: 290.1 KBOkay got bored the other day and went to walk around a pick and pull salvage yard. I came across a mid 2000 bmw with the font of the engine torn apart with one cam gear and small timing chain still attached. So I snagged them and the only other thing on the car worth anything a mint looking rear trunk badge. I can't take credit for the idea but liked it so much I thought I would make one and save some serious cash. Thank you John's you pull it for an awesome deal on the parts under $5. Its not finished yet just proof of concept. All in for a one of a kind shop clock under $15 and a fun little project

The design speaks to the ephemeral
nature of BMW and MINI timing chains
and guides (especially in N14 engines).
Tick tock tick tock ... Boom

Ditto - OP... I'm in PA also if you're inclined to do another one please let me know I'd be happy to make you a fair offer for one. I'd be partial to an E46 version for obvious reasons but I am not picky!

I would be happy to make a few more if time and parts become available. Shipping might be a bit high this thing is not the lightest but its small enough to maybe fit in a flat rate box with the clock hands taken off

I'm close to Philly, if you're on the eastern side of the state would be more than happy to pick up. As much as I like the clock not sure it merits a drive to Pittsburg!

Better yet, the drive down to Northern Virginia on backroads would really let y'all do some performance testing.

I'm good on the extended road trips, I did 2,807 miles nonstop this summer. Will be staying close to home for a while!

You do realize selling something with the BMW logo is illegal without a licensing agreement. I worked on licensing with two large consumer goods brands both licensing of our brand outbound and inbound from firms like Disney. You can do what you want but putting it on a blog that BMW could see is an invitation for a letter from an attorney.

Good point. Seems like OP was mainly interested in making something fun for himself. What a cool idea. Also like making them unique to the year/model. You could just produce/distribute them without the logo, and end user could add their own.

I’m not an expert on trademark law, but are
you really usurping their logo if you use an
actual BMW manufactured part for the
roundel? It’s not like you’re copying their
logo, just using one bought from them anyway.

all the parts with the exception of the clock movement are BMW parts sourced off salvaged cars. I haven't reproduced or copied any of there logos.

I havent listed anything for sale and all parts where taken off bmws found in a salvage yard including the BMW emblem. So i m not sure how that can be a copy right issue or need to have a licensing agreement. i havent reproduced their logo in anyway. I understand where you are coming from and appreciate the advise. But in the same token wouldn't that make it illegal for a junk yard to sell the parts used since they are reselling parts that contain the bmw emblem? Take a look at any oem part that you remove from a bmw somewhere it is stamped with their logo. So since you brought this up can you explain your thought process on this. How i choose to buy their parts and assemble them and if i was in turn to resell these parts how that is a problem.

You're 100% fine. If you were to, let's say, decide to make your own BMW logos instead of incorporating used parts they MAY have an issue theoretically BUT even if you did that and sold a few clocks a year the juice definitely ain't worth the squeeze in terms of coming after you. If you were doing something horribly offensive using their logo maybe they'd catch wind of it and send you a cease and desist letter but even that's a maybe.

I'll happily trade that free legal advice for for a clock with the BMW logo

I didnt think there is any problem i just wanted a clarification from the person that posted where his thought process was. and as you said even if i produced and sold a handful of these I cant see anything coming of it

There is a reason Lego, Disney, Barbie etc charge 8% royalty. All companies that license product would require samples for approval and written agreements. I’ve dealt with many, many lawyers and yes I was an executive at Lego and when I left Lego the new company I went with did licensing of our brand with many different industries as well as many brands where we put those brands on our fishing products. We licensed our brand to put on clothing and other products.
Like I said, they don’t care if you found the logo in the trash can, they own the rights to the brand if you are putting it on another product and representing it as BMW. Will they come after you if you make a dozen, no. I have worked licensing on literally dozens of products from many different manufacturers in many industries. We discovered products and yes our attorneys sent letters whenever we found products trying to use our brand. Simply go to the BMW NA website and look at all the products they sell that they source and put their logo on like shirts, golf equipment, coffee mugs and on and on. Now do you really think they would want hundreds of dudes deciding hey I’ll put out a BMW watch, underwear, tools or whatever.

So you are suggesting that all of those super cheesy 'recolor your roundels in 5 minutes' stickers and fanboy window decals/T shirts that clot up eBay got licensed? I'm just a little skeptical of that. I also think this would fit closer under the copyright that lets rap stars sample music - it is art using found objects, not new branded merchandise. And pretty cool art at that - much better than the lamp with a brake rotor base that I made in high school. Now if I could just get my wife to buy it that those summer tires with a sheet over them are really end tables....
