I submitted an order for some winter wheels but the dealer is saying they will not fit my vehicle...they must not be on the approved list of wheels. I have looked over the forum and see some people here are running a similar setup so I wanted to get some input on their experience. I can still go ahead with the order but they highly recommended against it so I want to be cautious since I may not be able to return them for a refund if there are fitment issues.

I ran a search on wheelsforless.ca and it came back and recommended 18" but in the aftermarket section it does show the 17" (Part number R61A17004) as substitute size.

Either way, the tire size is appropriate (although 17" winter tires could have been a bit narrower - 205/50-17 - next time for better winter capability). The wheel size appears correct to me for those tires. I say this as I have the same tire and wheel size setup. I don't understand the problem.

They are saying the wheel itself will not fit my vehicle. Could be the design doesn't clear the brake caliper? |

Ah...more clear, and thank you. There are some 17" wheels that will fit over the blue MSport caliper and others that do not. For example, per Tire Rack, the BBS SR 17" wheel does fit, and that is what I run over my MSport calipers. You need to check with your wheel supplier for that detail. The dealer may be assuming no 17" wheels will work, but that is not true. It is on a case-by-case basis.

My winter wheels and tires are 17", but as others have mentioned some of the 17" rims won't fit over the calipers. I purchased wheels with tires (Michelin X Ice) mounted from Tire Rack a few years ago seemlessly. I plan to switch from summer to winter in the next week or two.

I trust in the power of TireRack. I have always used winter wheels on my BMWs. I bought 17" winter wheels from TireRack for my 235 about five years ago and have not looked back. 17" is the right size, because you want more flex in the winter, but you have to be very careful about fitment. I would not order a wheelset that the dealer discouraged. Once you have the wheels, then any tire of that size is fine. And oh yes, skinny is better too, smaller contact area.

I purchased summer wheels last year from Apex 18x8.5" et35 and put snow tires on my stock rims. Running Michelin pilot sport PA4's 225/40/18 on stock wheels.

I would ask that question very specifically beforehand. 2 Series come with standard grey calipers or blue, larger MSport calipers. I believe you have the blue MSport calipers on your model. The dealer should have detail for with versus without MSport brakes for wheel fit.

Who's your local dealer in Ottawa? I had 17"s fitted at Sipan for my winter setup. - they JUST clear the calipers. So close that when BMW serviced my brakes this summer they left one of whatever those two little things that stick out from the caliper stickling out too far and it rubbed. Had to go argue with Elite it was their fault (guys - 4th season on these rims, they fit on the OTHER three corners... sigh...)

I got a used set of 7.5x17" MSW Type 22s 3 years ago for my 328 and used them for a season. Ended up trading that in for my M240 and since then I've used them for another 2 winters. The offset is pretty aggressive compared to the 328 fitment, and the brake clearance is small, but they do fit without any issues. I think the offset is 35mm but may be wrong.
Cheap wheels but they've survived the last 3 winters so I'm satisfied. Honestly in black with the more aggressive offset I think they look better than the factory wheels. |
