I run Liquimoly 5w-40 high tech (purple bottle).

LM - TopTec4200 or Special Tec 5w30 but might try the new molygen this spring

Motul - 8100 X-Cess 5w40 - went back to LM because 5w30 is recommended most for summer, and 0w30 for colder seasons by BMW's revision. The cars came with 5w30 and they revised the N55 to 0w30 a couple of years ago. Don't want to risk any strain on the bearings/oiling system so I've been sticking to 5w30 and 8k km intervals (5k miles approx.)

Thanks for your reply I will definitely consider running Liqui Moly TopTec4200 or Special Tec 5w30. Can I ask what is the major difference between them both and which of the two do you choose to run more often.

To be honest, whatever Napa can get me I usually don't plan these things very well. They seemed to have TopTec for the longest time, then SpecialTec so I said "what the heck".. Never go past 7-8k km so I don't think there's anything to gain or lose from either. LiquiMoly's descriptions all sound the same to me but MolyGen seems to have an additive that sounds like it would have a benefit over the rest of them, at a slightly higher price..

5k mile or less oil changes with full synthetic (not blends) and you can use what ever you want and have that "superior" result. Filter change with oil too, don't skimp! Really is simple...

Good luck!

I'd agree that you can pretty much use whatever synthetic you want so long as you're changing it frequently.

That does not mean that LL-01 is ONLY good for long oil change intervals. LL-01 is an oil standard based around the performance of oil in BMW engines as tested by BMW engineers. These are not regular engines. They run hot. They have a turbo. They make tons of low-end torque. BMW LL-01 standard requires an oil with HTHS of 3.5cP + and NOACK of <10%. You buy an LL-01 oil you're not just buying an oil that can go longer before being changed. You are buying an oil that is VERY robust to survive the high heat, load, and volatility of a high performance turbo engine. It's a very high standard to meet and it's usually always a better oil than anything non-ll-01 you find on the shelf. Of course there are even better boutique oils when you can get something like Castrol Edge European 0-40 for $20 why use anything else.
