I decided to try these out, and my initial impression is that the one on the driver's side does a great job of displaying several lanes to the left of the car. The passenger side one seemed too far away to be as helpful, but I am still fiddling with adjusting the mirror position.
One suggestion to pass along is that I have found that if I position the passenger side mirror properly to see traffic, it is in a poor position to assist with parking. So I set it for driving in seat position 1, and then used position 2 to duplicate position 1 but with the mirror moved to show closer to the car. that way I do not have to play with the mirror while I am parking. |

After all the years I have been driving, I was kinda surprised this one escaped me (passenger mirror being convex). Being that as it may, you naturally get a wider view on that side. With these extended view, you get a very big benefit on the drivers side. The passenger side for me has benefits for parking, merging on that side and pulling to and from curbs like at the airport. The blind spot hiding cars on the passenger side is much smaller but there are still the other benefits, so nice to have in my opinion. I changed my mirror position several time before I found the 'sweet spot'. In my car that setting on the passenger side is seeing just a bit of the back of the car in the regular mirror, and then down lower than I usually would. Being lower, you get a better view of the curb in both mirrors for parking. And the blind spot mirror shows what is doing higher up for objects closer in. These are not as distorted as the usual bubble ones, so useable in that way. It took me a good week or so of fiddling and finding my preferred views. I went back and fourth but finally am 100% used to them and have them locked in where I know right where I want to look for different maneuvers and definitely have an 'extended view' (good name) around my car. I think that is the best way to describe. Also sort of like using bifocal glasses for the first time. At first you have more places to look and you don't know where you want to. For me it became like second nature and now very, very useful. I hardly have to turn my head to see various areas all around the car. Especially a recent trip to the airport on that passenger side. Getting in and out of the chaos was a great help on both sides!

I bought the OEM BMW ones from Schmiedmann, which work really well and don’t have the annoying “objects may be closer than they appear” writing that makes the bottom of the passenger side mirror useless. I haven’t tried the cheap non-OEM mirrors from Schmiedmann

One place I would never skimp is on optics, glass, etc. It is not that they can't do it well, they just usually don't. Otherwise it would not be a lot cheaper. For those who have not really looked into the ones I posted. Whether you love or hate the idea, one thing I think everyone who has actually used or felt them in person would agree on. They are quality glass made in the USA. Unless it was an old beater, in my opinion, I would never want to put a very cheap piece of glass I use every day on a premium car. Sort of the same idea as putting bargain basement tires on a quality euro sports car. I have no experience with those specific ones linked above. But I do on past VW's and the cheaper euro style aspherical ones ECS carried back in the day. My .$02 as I have gone both ways over the years. Some things are worth going premium quality and some are not always a great value. I guess that depends upon the user though!

Two things: 1) I am from Europe, grew up with these wide angle mirrors, and I can't get used to the American one. They're awful. 2) I get them from Latvia/... Yes, more expensive (I paid $130 for my last ones for my M240i). BUT: original BMW stamps, dimming works. (not sure about heating, I live in Los Angeles...) |

Looks like they are doing a 24 hour flash sale, also listed on their website.
The code is 24hourflash for 25% off. A much larger discount than the usual promotions if anyone was interested.

The dimming ones OEM; the European specs, aspherical. I am under the impressions that the right one doesn't dim, but I wanted some clarification from user TINY BMW on whether his right ones dim or not. Seems like he is getting them from Latvia or some place.

I have used the wider settings for rearview mirrors for a number of years [20 -25] This has always performed well for me. However, my 2017 230I has about 30% of the view blocked by the rear seat headrests. The dealer refused to remove them saying they are necessary for safety in event of a rollover. I think this means they could not get them off. The headrests block the view of a car in the adjoining lane before you can see it in the side mirror, thereby creating a blind spot where none should exist.
I bought and installed the blind spot mirrors and have found they work great. If anyone notices cars disappearing behind the headrests these are a good solution. |
