COMMENTS

Now that the BMW M235i specs have been revealed, we take a look at how they compare on paper to the M135i hatchback, 435i coupe, 135is and E46 M3. All in all, its specs are very encouraging for those of us clamoring for a return of a E46-type sports coupe/sedan.

The 2 Series will soon be officially revealed, but for now, you can get a great preview by way of these previous M235i spy photos.

Just curious, why you didn't do a compare shot to the E92?

BMW site says that the length of the 435i is 4638mm, not 4380 as stated in the comparison. Would be very strange if the 2 were longer .

Why BMW come out with a power kit for the 4 series and not a M435i (and M145i hatch but not M335i)? What is the logic? Doesn't the success of Audi's S variants show there is a "business case" for such a car?

the 135is specs you have on that comparison are incorrect.

CORRECTION:

taken straight from the BMW USA website:

BMW 135is

Unladen weight 3373 (manual) 3439 (DCT)
Acceleration 0-60 mph - Manual transmission 4.9 sec
Acceleration 0-60 mph - Automatic transmission 4.8 sec

I thought 335is and 135is use N54 engine? Why listed as N55?

The N55 on the M135i/M235i is basically a normal N55 with M PPK? Then we should compare this car with the F30 335i or the 435i with the PPK if we have the details yet.

Probably the M235i will be the faster "normal" BMW on track

The figures above are all 0-62mph (0-100kmh).

Awesome, now don't add too much weight when adding two more doors (Gran Coupe)!

Love the comparison to the e46, was hoping this vehicle would be nearly identical in size to an e46! Love the size of mine, ready for something new but with similar dimensions.

5kw = 2hp

Here in Europe the M135i has 320 PS or 235kW

If M235i is 240kW, it should be 326 PS like a 740i

335is uses the same engine, with slightly detuned power output, of Z4 35is and 1M, which is badged as N54T, so you are right there.

On the other hand, 135is is basically a PP model using the same N55 engine of the later model 135/335i.

Not 100% sure I like the new design direction of the 235...a little bulbous and dis-proportioned at the back. Seems bloated, but maybe it's better looking in person, we'll have to see.

Nice to see it'll still perform and it's a bit lighter, though. :-)

Jason,

E46 M3 acceleration number is incorrect. That is the 0-62 mph/100 km/h number for a manual E92 M3, not E46. E46 was 5.1 per BMW. Maybe, there was a 4.8 sec to 60 mph for US models (with SMG) which could have caused this confusion.

Also, length/width/height of 135is indeed belongs to 1M not 135is, 1M is slightly longer (2 cm.), slightly taller (around 1 cm.) and considerably larger than other 1 coupes, wheelbase is identical.

Lastly, 435i dimensions do not match inches vs mm, they seem to repeat 135is in mm. while in inches they are pretty different, my guess inch is correct, mm is wrong.

Good lord, you guys are a tough crowd!

Thanks Jason. Great comparo. I like how the M235i is shaping up ... A LOT! Specifically when compared to the e46 M. Always has been my benchmark. Looking forward to test driving one.

Point is people were saying the same things back then. Itll look better IRL than it will in pictures. Especially when all we have are grainy photos from odd angles.

Also does 2addicts sound really weird to anyone else? 2fanatics sounds better.
