M240i xDrive vert: Do I need an alignment?
Picture attached. Tires are wearing like crazy on outside, but only on front. Thread already gone on places.
Car has 12500 miles. Inside of tires still great. I've never had a car eat tires that fast. Thinking of putting on Michelin Pilot 4S, but don't want this to be happening to them, unless of course it is normal... I'll add better pictures later today... Yes, I always get the car aligned with new rubber.

It isn't really unusual to eat the outside of the fronts - it is an endemic problem that only gets worse the harder you drive them; no standard way to add camber. Factory RFT's make it much worse, as they seem to have very poor durability (mine crapped out at about 10k with 'cupping'). Some say that the non-BMW versions of the Michelins are more durable for this; I went with Cont's and didn't have as much of a problem as I was hearing about the MPSS (but I never really compared directly). Keeping pressure a few # higher than stock seems to help. I'm now running Potenza s007's on rims a half inch wider, and they seem to wear better despite being a softer compound; probably a stiffer carcass, and better geometry on the proper wheel size.
FWIW, this is what a few track days will do to the Conti's (April, then Sept): |

This is not a "runflat" issue. The tires wear quickly because its soft rubber so that the tires can match the performance of your car. Harder tires which would last longer would make the car handle worse.
The shoulder wear can be attributed to hard driving. Where ideally if you plan on driving it hard often you should do alignments often. And if you really like pushing with track or autoX you'll want to add camber in the front. This is greatly help with the shoulder wear you are experiencing. |
