new JB4 firmware has oil temp now

So glad to have oil temp now!

Was hoping to see lower temps with casual city driving though. Was hoping for ~220ish in the city at most.

Anyone know if the OEM m235 oil cooler has a thermostatic switch that opens up after a certain temp is reached? I hope so...

I come from a nismo 370z and the Z has notorious temp issues from the factory. Had to run a 34 row Setrab oil cooler to keep it in check on the track.

I have had a P3 vent gauge with oil temp readout almost since I got the car.

BMWs tend to run a little hot on purpose for some reason. On the street, temp is usually 240-248. I think the "thermostat" point is about 249, because I have never seen it get that high unless I was banging off the rev-limiter (happened once).

Oil temp is actually very well controlled in this car. I have had many, many track days in SoCal, and I have never seen the oil get any warmer than it is on street -- it actually runs a bit cooler (low 240s) on track than on the street, and as soon as you start your cooldown lap, it drops 10 degrees (into the 230s) very quickly. It does this in pretty much all conditions, including extreme heat -- 105+ degrees on track temp. You will get heat soak from your charge air long, long before the oil starts overheating.

What is that display on? A phone? Through JB4 BT connection?

How are you getting your JB4 to display and track oil temp. Is there something extra that is required to achieve this?

Sorry found the new firmware (N55_FSERIES_OBDII_EWG_6) on N54Tech, Thanks...

235-240 is normal in stop go and highway, no need to get a bypass valve, wont matter, and you will be running out of the designed range. Temps will drop 15 or so degrees in clean air. Temps drop on track, no need to worry, I cant get mine even close to overheating, I run 0w 40 for track. FBO with meth.

Thanks! Does the JB4 BT interfere with your stereo or phone BT?

I would have thought the 6-cyl logging the new update brings would be more newsworthy than the oil temp

Thanks for the input on oil temps. I still like to see my oil temps at around 200* on track days. 240* is just too high for me and most will say oil starts to break down at around 240*.

Some people were saying the BMS oil cooler bypass works very well. It's cheap so I will give it a shot.

Anthony,

If oil temp too low (ie close to water temp) then oil stops being the lubricating medium and starts lubricating and cooling - this is an issue whether for DD and / or track use.

As stated already 240 is perfectly normal. Limp mode comes in at around 280-285 deg...

Updated this morning using the bluetooth kit. Very handy having oil temp. Hopefully it'll be in celsius soon.

On the android app, I'm able to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit easily in the settings portion of the app.
