M sport brake caliper rebuild
I'm rebuilding my M sport calipers and there appears to be some kind of seal that is not part of the pistons that I am having a hard time identifying. In the photo below the piston has been removed and the red arrow points to what looks like another seal. It looks like each piston has three replaceable parts; the piston ring, the piston dust cap, and the seal in the photo. I have not seen the seal in the photo in any of the rebuild kits I'm finding online. Can anyone clarify?

Yeah. That's the plastic like part of the cap. You need to pry it out with a flat screw driver
One piece attaches to the caliper and the other to the piston |

Note that while the front and rear dust boots have different BMW part numbers (the fronts contain twice as many parts), they all have the same Brembo part number (20.4872.46). When I bought rear dust boots, they had to be ordered from Germany. I could have just ordered a third set of front dust boots and used them on the rear caliper pistons. I had my shop measure one front piston, and it measured at 40mm. According to Zeckhausen, this is consistent with the Brembo dust boot part number. Given that all of the dust boots are the same Brembo part number, I've assumed all of the pistons on the car are 40mm. I suppose it's possible that could turn out not to be true, as I'm no expert in these matters, and we only measured the one piston. Below are sources of piston seals and piston size cross-reference information that I've identified. I expect there's other info out there as well. Wow, Thanks
Wow, Thanks. So much good info. I had already spent hours looking at suppliers and trying to figure out the correct dust boots for these calipers. The photos that suppliers post often don't match the actual product so that makes it even more confusing. High temp boots make total sense. All 12 of the boots were split with half on piston and the other half stuck in housing. I was also concerned that the front and rear pistons were slightly difference sizes so i was careful about keeping the pistons in order after I removed them. Glad to hear they are all the same and they all use the same boot. You guys are so great with helpful info.
thanks again. |
