XDrive reliability?

I was talking to an owner of an xDrive M240 about his car and he said he liked it but isn’t looking forward to what he considered to be inevitable maintenance and reliability trouble with his driveline. He said XDrive cars are notorious for eventually always having costly problems.

Since I’m in the market now and was leaning toward XDrive for myself, but intend to upgrade power and drive something less than granny-like, he made me wonder if I would be better off with RWD + LSD.

Can anyone comment on the reliability of M240is with XDrive? Thanks ahead for your advice.

Haven't heard any real issues with the awd system. I assume he didn't really know what he was talking about and figured that since the awd system has more moving parts that it'll be more expensive to maintain and fix compared to a rwd car?

I'm sure abuse would be a factor but I haven't heard many horror stories so far.

Whatever option you go with just stay on top of fluid changes. Whatever bmw tells you change your diff and transfer case fluids!!

M240 won't have drain plugs, only fill so it's a little more work. My local bmw dealership didn't even have a fluid change in the system to give me an estimate on price. They rather you kill your diff and charge you for a new one. In reality it's not difficult maintenance and you can do it yourself.

I have been running stage 2 e30 tune for about a year, daily and occasionally track my car and have had zero issues so far, 2017 M240xi.

Thanks for the input. Do you know how to look up what the recommended maintenance schedule is on these cars in order to know when to do that and what the costs are ahead of time?

i dont think xdrive is inherently less reliable, but if there are problems it will generally be more expensive to fix.

You will find some variation based on who you ask, how they use their car, and what modifications they have.

I personally change my plugs every 20,000 miles, oil every 5,000, diffs/transfer case every 30,000, trans (auto) I will be doing at 45,000.

Plugs and oil are nothing crazy. Diff and transfer case fluid can be a little pricey if you use bmw fluids. Redline is a reputable company for a fraction of the cost that I use to keep cost down in my diffs, transfer case you have to use bmw fluid but you only need one bottle so it's not bad. Trans fluid requires a kit with a new pan so it's a bit more expensive, here is a link to give you an idea: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...-24118612901kt

Someone new to BMWs or to creating their own maintenance schedule could do worse than take a look at a couple of documents produced by Mike Miller, the Tech Talk columnist at Roundel magazine. Mike's suggested intervals, along with quite a bit more information, can be found in those documents:

Lifetime Maintenance Schedule v3.13https://www.zpost.com/forums/attachm...9&d=1564415575.

Alternative BMW Maintenance Schedulehttps://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/at...3&d=1554314287.

If sometime in the future those links become broken, Mike will email the documents to you if you contact him at mikemillerroundelmag@drivewheels.hush.com.

Thanks. Do you know which Redline products would be appropriate for XDrive fluids as well as what is involved for replacing them? For example, do I need to go to dealer to have them replaced if I don’t have a lot of tools at home?

I recommend referring to your manual for fluid specs but my 2017 M240xi with an open diff takes these fluids:

Front Diff (2 bottles):
https://www.bimmerworld.com/Red-Line...Oil-Quart.html

Rear Diff (2 bottles):
https://www.bimmerworld.com/Red-Line-MT-85-Quart.html

Transfer Case (1 Bottle):
https://www.bimmerworld.com/Genuine-...220397244.html

You may not use all the fluid but better to have extra than not enough. As I mentioned bmw dealership may not do this for you. I have a trusted local shop with bmw experience I go to for all my maintenance. They don't need any fancy tools, just a simple hand pump to suck out as much of the old fluid as possible since we don't have drain plugs, then they refill until the fluid starts to come out of the fill plug and seal it up.

Auto trans is more involved as I mentioned but nothing difficult as long as you follow the instructions. I recommend not cheating here and using ZF parts and fluid. The link I sent in previous post has a tutorial.

I tracked my 335XI (hard) for 4 years and not even a hint of a drive-line issue. The majority of BMWs are XIs here in Canada. Very uncommon for drive-line issues like the other poster mentioned. Drive it like you stole it my friend.
