So what software do people use to tune these cars themselves?
I don't mean BM3, JB4, etc. Actual software so that I can make my own map, not upload a pre-made one.

I know that the ECU has to be benched first, but what options exist software wise for tuning these cars?

Something along the lines of HP Tuners if anyone is familiar.

I've tried searching and there seems to be a bunch of different options overseas but wasn't sure if anyone actually tried anything themselves.

I've asked the same... Don't think it's out there, or if it is, it's being held tightly to the chest.

HP Tuners type ECM and "on car" tuning is the only real way a tune should be used for maximum performance and safety (equipment) IMO.

I love HP Tuners and have for quite a while, done my own tunes, on my old GM. Done this on an boosted (Supercharged) engine, with transmission variables included as well.

Really is more simple than these tunes (BMW) make it out to be, and I think to a great deal, the tunes are porting over from S58 ecm data. But just install a wideband, and start dialing it in, no big deal, lol. An engine after all is just fuel/air/spark Different fuel, no problem, just swap file, add more exhaust flow, no problem, just retune, same for intake. If you're on a "boxed" tune and make these changes, you will not benefit unless the additional air, different fuel, etc., is accounted for. The programming to reach 14.7 (Lambda), driven by the O2's will always control the engine unless that data point is controlled.

Like the fueling limit issue apparently, I question why aren't larger injectors being used and then scaled to adjust? I'm reading so much about fuel issues but find little data as to injector maximums, or if replaced with larger injectors, when the pump goes static. Same for high E fuels...

It really is simple with HP Tuners to adjust, been done by thousands of people who track/race their cars.

I'm not so sure the delay as well on the B58 coding is to drive desire/demand for product. If HP Tuners were accessible for these ECM's, an entire little cottage industry would evaporate. Yes, with "self" tuning, users could exceed manufacturers tolerances and destroy their vehicles, but that's an inherent risk, lol, when modding.

So... I'm curious as well.

You know that u can edit and make your own maps through bm3 right? Like bm3 is not just a platform for OTS maps

Honestly I did not. I was under the impression that you had a premade map and could then adjust a couple options. I'm essentially looking for something close to a standalone.
If I can actually get into the spark and fueling tables, etc, I think I found what I need.

@cooolone2 I've heard that hptuners is working on Mercedes so I imagine BMW should be coming eventually.

That would be awesome if for anything, just the familiarity with the platform that would make tuning that much easier.

I also wasn't aware the BM3 allowed for user modification to fuel maps, etc., Will obviously dig a little more on the subject.

You can edit your stock tune and create a custom map. However, it requires you to buy a license, setup your account, and then configure your account with your info as a tuner (pretty sure it's just your name and contact information) and it will set you up as an end user tuner, not a professional shop tuner where people can locate you in the tuner directory for custom tunes.

Connect your laptop with an ENET cable, run the agent and then open the BM3 app. Under "my maps" in the left column, select your "stock tune" and the next window has an option labeled "Map Editor."

If you want to use your stock tune but add features like "MAX Cooling Mode" or GTS Startup Roar" or edit your exhaust burble profile, this option is in the top right corner of your stock tune labeled "Config."

I'm not a spokesman for BM3 or PTF, I'm just a guy who uses it but has never been daring enough to make my own map in risk of blowing my $10k motor. I don't have the knowledge to create a tune that is safe for a motor so I won't attempt it.

Would really like to see your tuning adventures in another thread though if you pursue a custom, self made map.

As mentioned you can use Bootmod3 to make your own map. That being said, its best to get one from a professional custom tuners like Jordan

Does anyone happen to know most reputable tuners in Germany that I might look up and pay a visit to (I.e., get a tune at)?

Yea bm3 has OTS maps and stuff. But u can actually go in and make your own maps too man

Bm3 is a tuning platform and you can certainly create your own custom maps, using the oem tune as a baseline. See attached for index of tables available for n55 ewg and then see the individual tables for ignition alone.

Once you purchase the platform, you get 1 free off the shelf map of your choosing, and it is free to tune your own

SKN is around forever but pricey AC Schnitzer .....

Any reason not to do it yourself? Get BM3 / MHD/..... and flash the car. Of put down more money and work with a tuner online for a custom tune.
