I did ran 32psi front and back last time and it felt like I could even do 30 psi. I was kinda shocked how low I could go with this tire. Weird thing is that I am not improving my time at all with this tire compare to MPSS (which I ran 45~48 psi in front). I do need lots of ride along with fast drivers and see how they drive. For sure, I don't know how to brake properly and put weight on proper tire. I would love to do Grudge match with you but I already set up with my buddy on Saturday. (and I am not sure if I go on Sunday or not. If I do, I would do Grudge match with you) See you on Saturday. |

Well today Tajoman really stepped up his game after riding with me on my first sketchy run. I was quite proud of his improvement. Our group splits runs 3 in am and 3 in pm after previously doing 6 straight. It's a blessing since my right front was corded after the morning runs.

I could not believe what you were doing in the 1st run. This is my fastest run. 53.5xx sec I was going to ask you to ride along in my car in run 4 or 5. Maybe next time. |

you are running 235/45/17 RE71. I just finished our season on 225/45/17 on 17x7.5 ET 35. Is it worth going to 245/40/17?????????? I am not worried about class legality. Should I get some 17x9 wheels???? what ET is needed to fit them without spacers? I am a newbie. Thx to all.

you will be ok with 17x8 ET40~42 for 245/40/17. I'm even thinking about putting 245/40/17 on 17x7.5 rim. I still have plenty of tire left for whole next year, so plenty of time to decide. |

Thanks for posting - I enjoyed watching that!
Are you still on the 235s - if you are, what size do you think you'll go with once your current set is used up?

It's about half way worn after about 90 runs of Auto X (plus about 1000 miles of driving.) I was thinking about going 245/40/17 of Direzza III but maybe little too crazy idea to put 245 on 7.5" rim. I'm thinking 235/45/17 Hankook RS4 (widest thread width, better wear) or Direzza III (almost same grip level as RE71r with little wider thread width than RE71r). Will see how long this tire lasts. |

I am pretty happy with the way the 245/40/17 RE71Rs worked on my 17x8 TR Motorsport wheels in last Sunday's autox. Some understeer, but I could also get the rear to step out at times too. No rubbing. The fronts edges look good after 10 runs and are not rolling excessively. I will be rotating them every event. I kept them at 35psi all around and will experiment a little next time.
I think this it the way to go if you don't already have wheels. |

I kinda want to stay in stock FS class.
17x8 seems really good option for overall grip balance. 2 series should have 245s all around from the factory. (especially xdrive model) 225 in front is way too narrow for the weight in front. |

Now I am seriously considering to go 245/40/17. Only thing I kinda worried about was 'IF the tire comes off the rim' but it looks like it's not really a problem. |

The autocrossers I used to know swore by going in the reverse direction - fitting the smaller tire to wider rim so the sidewall was stretched taut. They got the kind of pyro readings they wanted that way, and would talk about it as using the whole tire, rather than (outer) half of a slightly larger one (also saves unsprung weight). This was a few decades back, so tire companies may have found a workaround to this for the autoX-specific tires. If your temp readings aren't nice and even across on those overwide setups, it may be worth your time to trial a comparison of s/t like a 225 or 235 on an 8.5 or 9 inch rim.

Not much I can do with rim width to stay in stock FS class.
225/45/17 vs 235/45/17 vs 245/40/17, not sure which will be the best for Auto X. At least the RE71r has very stiff sidewall. So It may not be that bad to go wider tire. |

I think I am getting used to this tire.
Limit is way higher than I imagined and I feel like I always drive little bit too conservatively. (it still destroys the outer edge, lol) I tried higher pressure this time (36~38 psi in front, 34~35 in rear) and felt better that way. Better turn in and stability. I met a guy with very fast ES Miata and he had 225 section tire on 6" rim. It looked insane but he was super fast. I will definitely try 245/40/17 when this set wears out. |

Why isn't anyone running an 18" wheel? I thought 18" was the sweet spot, lower profile, less side wall, but not too heavy?

I recently found out that some of the Civic type R drivers put 285 section tire in front on 8.5" rim (and 245 in the rear) without rubbing.
There is a reason why that car is dominating DS now. Good chassis, light weight and 300hp with tire that can take all the power. |

Today was my first time at a track. (Autobahn CC south)
This was a high speed Auto x called 'Track sprint'. (thanks to TSSCC for organizing this event) It was pretty scary for me but ton of fun. Already singed up for the next one. lol |

Tajo, brake much later and harder. your wheels should be screeeching around every turn.
looks like tons of fun, more like a Time Attack than an autox.
