First Service/Oil Change
When should I bring my car in for its first service and oil change? I'm a little over 4,000 miles now.
The car says service is due at 12,000 miles, but that seems crazy to me. |

you can change your oil on your own... else you need to take it when it's says on idrive for free maintenance if it's available there
7500m oil changes is probably a good idea |

Yea, I was reading the debate in the 1,200 mile service thread. Seems to me that the break in period would generate a lot of metal shavings in the oil so it's good to get them out prior to 12,000 miles, which is like a whole year of driving for many people. Might even do one at 5,000.

At the dealer it's under $100, so even if you don't do it yourself why not? Seems silly not to do it at 1200.

I plan on changing the oil myself around 1200...but is anybody else also doing the transmission fluid? I have a 6MT. Just curious what others are doing.

It's one year or a maximum of 10,000. Your idrive could say it's not due until 18,000 but it doesn't matter. We get our X1 changed every year for free and we only drove 8,000 miles a year.

no it's not a maximum of 10,000.... it's whatever idrive CBS says
if it's been 8month of your last oil change and you have 11000 miles on the oil and idrive still says 1000m till service they won't change nothing |

I have to disagree with this. Per BMW all cars produced after July 2013 have a 10,000 mile interval. This was also posted by Jason on one of the sites. You should take your car in at 10,000 no matter what it says because it's basically not CBS based. That's why it starts at 10,000. This was a new policy. BMW never will print the policy because they change it just like them changing the free maintenance if you sell the car before 4 years which is new.
If you want a copy it's a service bulletin posted in the F30 thread on July 23, 2013 by Jason and is very specific regarding this. This applies to all BMW's. 12 months or 10,000 miles not 12 months or CBS

I just did my first oil change at 9300 miles. The oil and filter weren't really all that bad and it actually probably could have gone to 12,000, but 10,000 miles would have been a good idea.
My driving during this time (mile 0 to 9300) was a mix of low speed (20-30 mph) driving around residential/town/low speed limit areas and high speed (cruising at 75-120 mph and above for 30-60 minutes at a time) commuting on the autobahn. Although it is rare that I can drive over 120 mph without catching up to slow-mos in the left lane eventually. |

When I had my car in for a drivetrain malfunction around 6500 miles, they also changed my oil at that time. That was about a month ago and now I'm around 7500 miles. My service countdown light is around 500 miles now, so I guess it's around 8000 miles for my 228i. I'm glad they just did it, though, because I'm much more comfortable with 6500 miles than 8000 or more before an oil change.

In the US, BMW Car Club' of America's columnist Mike Miller maintains an 'Old School' maintenance plan that he'll email you on request, he provides high level guidance as well as detailed discussion of options and his thought process for the truly obsessed. Well worth reaching out to him for this. (he asks that recipients not redistribute the document, and I'll respect that request).
If you haven't already, joining the Car Club is a great idea, very inexpensive and well worth access to Roundel magazine, where Mike runs a great Q&A column. Some other nice benefits as well, including local chapter activities. |

Believe BMW has switched to Shell/Pennzoil as there official branded oil, but not sure how the stock of the previous BMW branded Castrol oil will phase out to the new oil. I would use the oil listed in the owners manual and purchase from the dealer and an OEM filter and drain plug gasket - all frm the dealer. Not that another brand meeting specs is bad, but I'd do the branded oil this early in the cars life. |
