Settle or Order?! Suggestions
Hey guys,
I'm in a bit of a predicament, I'm in the process of buying a m235i but there are two choices; either get a m235i at the dealer with red interior and all the toys I want BUT it's automatic and white OR order the way I want it with black and manual... The one at the dealer has every thing I would get if I order expect obviously the manual and paint job. another thing is I'm gonna be car-less in the next two weeks which really play a huge role in this. I'm considering to just get a rental for the last 4-5 weeks. I feel that if I'm dumping close to 50k into a car i should get it the way i want it and not just settle, or am I just crazy? Another question is how long does it realistically take for it to arrive if ordered? the dealer keeps telling me 6-8 weeks, does that sound about right? Harder choice with the rental car question. Still, order what you want and wait. Negotiate across the car rental places for a small POS. You don't want to spend a long time regretting not getting EXACTLY what you wanted (speaking from personal experience).
FWIW, I sold my 335 3 weeks ago. I'm driving a 2004 Passat with 185k miles on it until what looks like June when my new M235xi comes in.

My 2 cents - order the one with the options you really want and don't settle for anything else.
I made that mistake with my last car. The anticipation of waiting for the new car and the hassle of driving something else until it arrives is far better than years of buyers remorse after the fact. |

Order.
If it was some package you wanted or some option, then you could live without (I wish they offered the sunroof alone when I ordered mine). But exterior color AND transmission? That's a huge impact on your experience with the car. |

The weeks you spend with the rental grumpy and inconvenienced will fade away much quicker when you're driving the exact vehicle you want. Conversely, the entire time you're driving the exact vehicle you didn't want will sting every damn day, sometimes a few times a day. Best of luck.

Order. I almost settled on an auto, which is a nice tranny, but ended up going into order. Then my SA found the exact build sans summer tires and we did a dealer transfer and I only had to wait 3 days to get the car.

Order. I did settle for a auto in my 2012 128. Lost a lot of money two years later trading it in for my manual 228

I'd say order as well! Colour and transmission is a big deal!
I was in a similar boat but only difference was the car that was already on the boat vs ordering was just HK sound... I chose the one already on the boat...

It's a big investment. Get what you want the first time so you don't regret it, trade it in, and lose $$$. It's probably going to take three months to get it in, but it just makes it all the sweeter when it's finally in your hands.

Six in one half dozen in the other! Even if you order exactly what you want...if you are like half the folks on this board you will want something else in two years anyway! Car people are not content for long!

unless they are giving you over 10% off on the one they have in stock i would wait it out for the order. if your not saving big bucks and its just a matter of waiting then you wait.

Order! I've been in a hooptie focus rental for the past 3-4 weeks and don't regret ordering the exact car that I want... luckily I pick up F80 next week at PCD :-)

Order! I really enjoyed the anticipation during the order period. Rent a car, you will survive it. My order took 8 weeks, but the dealer had a car in line for production. They just changed the specs.

Trust me. Don't settle for anything else. Been there done that, traded it in with a loss.

I'm going to go against the grain here. I would ideally have wanted a manual black car, as we normally only get black cars, and there was a used manual black on the lot, but I decided to go for the new white auto which was better equipped and couldn't be happier. This is the best automatic transmission ever. I like it much more than my wife's Z4 with the DSG, and I have no regrets at all.

I think "settle" is the wrong term...it's not like you're choosing between this and a Toyota Corolla. Be happy you can consider a car of this calibre and cost and go with what gives you the greatest fulfillment.
The color won't change the performance or behind the wheel feel and the auto goes faster and gets better gas mileage than the manual...it's also shiftable. If this is your dream car (as you configured it) then a few weeks of waiting is worth it. If not, take it home tomorrow and don't look back. |
