Mystery noise solved - hope it helps others

For way too long I've been bedeviled by a mysterious, highly repeatable, noise. It sounded like a coin sliding back and forth against hard plastic, occurred during hard(ish) acceleration or deceleration and sounded SO much like it was coming from the area of the right passenger door. Emptied the door pockets. Didn't help. Maybe the rear door pockets? Oh, right, there are none. Wait - maybe it's the passenger seat belt buckle sliding against the door frame in a pendular fashion. Nope, not it. Something in the arm rest storage bin? Certainly there was stuff there. Emptied it and ... no change. Under the ash tray cover? Nope.

I got my wife to sit in the back and she thought it was coming from the trunk. I flipped down the seat behind the driver so she could really be sure. Yes, she was pretty sure it was coming from the trunk. So we traded places, me sitting behind passenger seat and her driving. And what I heard was noise coming from ...

Any Sherlocks want to guess what I heard and what was the cause of the noise?

Sounds like a dropped bolt or nut somewhere in the trunk area. I read once that a mysterious sound in the door panel turned out to be a bottle dropped/left by someone during the assembly of the car. Another source is a coin rolling around the heater vent under the passenger seat.

That story goes back – if I recall right – about 40 years, and the car was a Cadillac.

Hopefully, the OP found my missing sunglasses.

Man, some of you guys seem pretty uptight over an attempt at some small level of interaction. Ah well.

Anyway, heater vent under the passenger seat is the correct answer. No idea why my wife thought it was from the trunk; sound was clearly from beneath seat. My first inclination was something in the seat rails, because I didn’t even realize the car HAD floor level vents. 3 pennies, a nickel and a quarter. All from my wife - she who drops change everywhere.

Maybe you all knew about coins in the vents, beats me. But if you didn’t, and you get a mystery sliding, there’s a likely culprit.

(Clickbait? How in the world does that make any sense? )

The worst under seat vents are in the E30.

It's a verifiable fact that over 100,000 cell phones have been eaten by these vents, never to be retrieved.

You were. How she could possibly have thought (in back of me in the trunk) is beyond me. As for how she got the change back there - I think she just throws it around randomly for future hard times. ;-)
