can i go faster than my spedometer safely

I was pushing 160 and i got walked by a ghibli going 190 something and i pulled up to the driver after and it was an old man (60 yrs) with racing gloves on that told me I need to be faster in order to try and show off.
Am i just fucking slow or is he a speed demon my speedometer only goes to 160 can i tune past that or what? Do i need a new instrument cluster? This all just happened if anyone wants the video dm me but help me please.

Damn straight – I'd lay down serious long green to be 60 years old again. Heck, I'd settle for 65, come to think of it!

No kidding.

On the street (read highway), 85 is the dividing line for me. Above that mph, I've never been confident that there's enough time to deal with lousy surface conditions that suddenly crop up, stuff on the road, and the sometimes unpredictable behavior of other drivers.

However, with no oncoming traffic on something like the 12-mile straightaway on US-50 W out of Austin, Nevada (see below), I'll definitely place the car up on the center line and run it up to around 130. Never had the foolishness to go faster than that on that stretch of road, or any other public road. Actually, that's not true – I ran my '06 Volvo V70R up to 152 on the A7 south of Hanover. I wouldn't do that again and wouldn't advise anyone else to either.

Ha! I get it. But to get to my age (or even to get to 19) you're going to have to slow down some!

This.

So you have a 2 series. It is a fun car for what it is, but complaining you were outrun by an M5 or a V8 Ghibli is kind of duh. There are many, many faster cars than yours. One day you may own one yourself, if hopefully you live to be 60 and don't kill anyone else along the way.

If you want to drive fast, take the BMW driving school course. You will not only learn and experience speed but how to do it in your BMW, safely. How the car reacts to different situations. Strengths and weaknesses (very few weaknesses).

I did it in CA before COVID and there is no experience like doing 100mph going into a hairpin curve on the track. Before you take your "hot" laps, you learn how to control, brake, skid your BMW. As the instructors say, "if your tires aren't smokin' and squeelin' you aren't doing it right."

The experience was not only fun but changed the way that I drive daily.

Speed off the track is dangerous-too many variables. Especially the idiot driving the other car.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their advice! I am looking into going to my home country argentina and taking a full course on racing on a track starting out with karting and slowly moving up! However, does anyone know if i ahould change my instrument cluster. Or what happens if i pass my speedometers limit? Ik i had no real chance against a v8 ghibli but is there anything i can do to even dream of keeping up? Also when going that speed i felt like i had control in the straights but i was going 153 on a curve and i felt like any bump would have just sent me . Any advice?

a lot of factors at 140+ mph.

any idiot an go fast in a straight line https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...9da_story.html

ideally you do a series of reconnaissance passes

no one really gets fast learning on public roads and low friction surface like snow and water really train your reactions to have consistent car control.

it's not worth outrageous speeding on the street an errant puddle of coolant can toss your car way quicker than any talent can correct.

Do not post it if it took place in the states.
Hitting 160+ on the roads - grandma's in Germany and the Middle East do it every day.
Car control like drifting is more an art than high speed on highways.
Late at night out in the mountains or rolling countryside with 4 wheel drifts and power slides when no one else is around has more cache.
If your in flat Florida doing 120mph on stroads thats for drunks.

At 18 - probably not, unless you grew up in karting or some junior formula program. Slow down and live.

I would be very surprised if your car is not electronically limited to 130mph as most non-M235/M240 cars came with all season tires thus BMW limited those to 130mph. The M235/240 are limited to 155mph assuming the car came with summer tires. In the VERY rare chance that your 230 xdrive convertible somehow came with summer tires, it would be electronically limited to 149mph.

You can remove the top limiter through various flash tuners, but your 230 won't go much past 150mph, if anything. Your car needs a ton more power to even go 170mph. A stock M235/M240 RWD hardtop will do lower 170s with the limited removed.

As for driving like this on US public roads, I wouldn't. Our roads aren't designed for this type of speed. A small bump, rut, etc. can cause a total loss of control and very likely death to you and others around you if you lose control at very high speeds. If you are caught driving at speeds like this, you're going to jail. If you hurt someone, you're going to prison for a long time. Roads like the Autobahn are well maintained, nearly glass smooth, and specifically designed for high speed running. US highways are not.

Unfortunately flat florida is my playground but the highways have some fun curves and a fair amount of traffic to give room to play with. I am a pretty solid drifter probably the best of my friend group i just truly cant afford the tire wear i.
