Real world MPSS vs MPS4

For background I have a 2017 M240i with Pilot Super Sports, my wife has a 2020 M240i with Pilot Sport 4 tyres, both sets have around 4000 miles on them.

Now it’s winter, I’ve noticed pulling out of junctions, I get wheel spin in the rain, even being gentle with the power!

So tonight I took my wife’s car out, not only is the ride so much nicer but almost no wheel spin, even when flooring it!

I’ve heard the Supers are more of a summer tyre, but are they really that much worse, am I imagining it!?😂

I had the PSS tires on my car until just a week or so ago. I noticed that when cold, they didn't grip at all and I'd routinely have the traction control kick in when cornering at slow speeds until they warmed up. They didn't seem bad in the rain, though. Have you noticed a difference after you've been driving a while vs. when first going out?

The rubber compound in the super sports gets harder below 40 degrees and at 20 degrees it can actually crack the rubber. Don't drive in the cold with them.

The PS4S is the replacement for the PSS and Michelin improved the overall performance of the PS4S so not surprised it’s out performing your PSS. I find the OS4S side wall to be a little softer than the PSS but the PS4S still outperforms the PSS in summer handling and grip.

It's worth noting that the still-available, BMW-specific Star Spec PSS offers greater tread width than does the generic PS4S. The rear width's difference is remarkable: 9.2" for the BMW tire, and 8.4" for the generic PS4S tire.

It was after I went to square 255/35-18 PS4S' for my M240i that I discovered the OEM 245/35-18 PSS tread widths of 9.2" were wider even than the 255 PS4S at 8.8". That came as a bit of a surprise. Had I done proper research, I would have chosen to put the BMW Star Spec 245s on the car.

Interesting that BMW * spec are actually wider because on the F8x and GTS the tires run narrow for 255/275 and 265/285. This is because BMW tends to run narrower tires so the rim provides better side wall support. My comparison of MPSS and MP4S are on my e92 m3 and F82 M4. Still have the stock PSS on our 240ix.

In the case of the B58 F22s, there was plenty of room for a rear tire wide enough to handle the car's power, while not so much in front. If I drove my car more, I'd take the 255 PS4S' off the car and replace them with the BMW 245s.

That would yield the wider tread and, I suspect, a compound somewhat better-suited to the car for which it was spec'd. I'm not that picky on the street, though, especially in a region where the back roads are generally pretty narrow.

The MPSS are summer tires. I replaced them for the first winter I got my car. I am now at my second set of MPS4S and very satisfied. I would not install anything else.

Yeah, unfortunately BMW didn’t design the F22 to have wide tires and low et wheels. I have several sets of wheels for my e92 M3s and f82 M4, and I can’t fit a single set of wheels on the car (including high offset winter wheels!). I do have a set of 3-piece 18” Forgeline ZX3R but one isn’t holding air so I need to disassemble, clean, reassemble and seal the wheel; however, I’m too anal to clean/rebuild just one! I think they’ll fit perfect with F 235 (maybe 245) and R 255. This is my wife’s daily driver I’ll pay closer attention to tread width specs on the PS4S.
