I suggest get the amp and do the front door speakers. Don't bother with the woofers or the rear speakers.

Also disconnect your center channel.

Most of that cost will probably the fitting, this is time consuming work stripping panels etc.

Search the audio subforum. There are recommendations for speakers, amp and other components.

There can be too much information in the Audio forum from too many obsessed audiophiles. It is a lot of detail and information that is lost on me or I do not care that much about. So, they way I look at it is BMW want $875 for the HK Audio upgrade which was not worth it to me. I wanted to see what I could do for say $1000 to make the HiFi system better. There is a shop in Oregon, Musicar, that does BMW HiFi system upgrades. Their level 1 package is an amp upgrade tuned for our cabin and the tweeters missing from the sail panels. For the price and the convenience it looks like the perfect upgrade.

Ahoy fellow hifi owner, the good news is that the hifi is a decent base for upgrades. So ill lay out the upgrades ive done so far, which have gone far to improve the sound of the system.

Order these front speakers: 292 shipped vs 499 new in the US.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-BMW-3er...wAAOSwwx5ezzVc

Order these Tweeter housings and put the focal tweeters in them.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...fi-51337269361

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...fi-51337269362

Order a 10" subwoofer of your choosing (i run a JL 10W3V3) and then order this box, tell visual ice what sub you ordered. Wait patiently for it to arrive from the UK after he makes it for you.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-2-SER...cAAOSwMLBapDWb

Get a suitable subwoofer amp for your sub.

Order this add a sub harness from technic PnP.
https://technicpnp.com/product/hifi-...ub-harnessloc/

Install it all and enjoy your kick ass setup. Disconnect the center speaker while you're at it.

Garage List
2017 BMW M240i  [9.00]
I replaced my front speakers with Focal K2's and they are phenomenal. I also added 2 Sundown 10's in a sealed box with a dedicated sub amp. I am 100% satisfied with the results. I've heard various setups with different brand speakers and to me, the Focal's are in a league of their own.

Replacing speakers provides the biggest bang for the buck. The factory HK speakers are expensive junk. The magnets are puny. The Focals mentioned above are a great upgrade. I went with the Eton speakers with the separate mid and tweeter as my car has/had the HK. I installed 2 way JLs out back. The subs are stock. I replaced the HK amp with the Audiotec-Fischer MATCH BMW 7UP amp with the usb module. This module bypasses the crappy digital to analog converter circuitry in the head unit. The sound is vastly improved.

Good responses. Those Focal 2 way speakers look like a good bang for your buck. I was hesitant on going with Musicar because of the lack of reviews in the Audio sub.

Am I the only person happy with the HK? I have chased HIFI upgrades for 25 years and like the results then sell the car for whatever reason. I have decided to be happy with what I have in terms of watches, cars, music, cameras and my old cat.

yup, I’m with you. I’m ok with it, not supremely happy but it’s ok. I’d love to have better sound but at my age now, I don’t care as much as long as I have tunes to listen to.

The Burmeister setup in my e450 is amazing. I wish this system sounded as good. I’ve decided that all of the HK systems are just meh. Either too bass heavy or not enough. I had it in my X5 and hated it. It was sooo damn boomy. Ditto for my e93. Ditto on my R56 Mini. I didn’t change any of them either. I just turned down the bass. On the f22, it doesn’t have enough bass. The rest of it sounds ok.

When you’re listening to XM or wireless airplay, you’re not getting the best sound anyway. The only way to get the best sound is to listen to a CD but I’m not doing that. So I just stay content with the stock setup and save some cash. But that’s just me. I’m happy that others are willing to take their cars apart though.

I have a "540 watt" HK system in my Pacifica and it is terrible, boomy and muddy. I changed the dash speakers and the HK ones were like what you would see in a 70's transistor radio. $50 Kenwoods were 100x better.

Where the F2x HK system really improves on the hi fi is properly placed tweeters.

I feel you on that, but i will say this has been the easiest car to upgrade i've ever done. With the Technic adapter and the battery in the trunk, the sub install was stupid easy. Speakers? well i 3d printed mount rings for the 4" focal integration coaxials i originally put in it which was also easy, but the HK tweeter mounts and the Focal Inside (aka polyglass) setup is better.

I'm okay with it because My 2'er is a convertible and the audio is as good as it's going to get, in my opinion at least.

I have the HK speaker system in my 17 m240i but compared to my 06 e90 with the surround setting it’s not as great. I don’t want to spend to much but want to get an upgrade out of my system. I removed the center speaker and enjoy it a little more but it’s not as loud anymore. I’m not very bright when it comes to sound systems. Any advice to help upgrade ?

I'm fairly pleased with my HK setup but I have made about $250 in upgrades to it. I'm running JL Audio speakers in the rear and an Eton B100XCN in the front center channel. I'm then running HI FI Tidal as my streaming service.

I actually have ripped lots of CD's and use the USB key from an old BMW GPS upgrade. They sound pretty darn good for my horrible abused tinnitus ravaged ears. Once the top is down it's all good. PS. Life in Florida with a drop top isn't too bad.

How do I do this? Is it a physical disconnect or an MMI disconnect?
