N20 engine on a 2014 BMW 220i

Hi Everyone,

I have a BMW 220i that was manufactured in 2014.

Was wondering if there is any place that I can check for engine serials or knowing which engine were affected by the infamous design flaws? If anyone can point me in the right direction.

Another question would be whether I should be proactive and ask my service center for a timing belt replacement?

Car did about 50K Miles.

Thank you!

The engine has a timing chain, and not a timing belt.

The 2014 model year is affected by the timing chain issues as far as I know. My memory is not good enough to recall the issue specifics, but I think it has to do with the timing chain tensioner not getting enough lube or something. The suspect parts were redesigned late in 2015. That is why my wife and I bought a 2016.

I'm unconvinced the redesigned parts will be problem-free over the long term. Basically, much like the older V8 powered Audi S4, BMW thought it would be wise to use plastic runners to guide the timing chain among other things. The redesigned parts are still plastic.

You should absolutely ask your service advisor sooner rather than later - if your car is covered by the extended warranty it will be up shortly. To do it at the dealer uncovered is about $6,000 and at my indie shop they quoted $3,500.

I'm the 4th owner of my car and they replaced what needed to be fixed no questions asked luckily. They screwed up the oil-pan gasket while doing it but I'll take that over a grenading engine any day.

Sadly, it does look like your N20 is included in the 7 year / 70000 mile warranty extension settlement.

I would ask my BMW service manager to check for the chain noise described in the document before reaching the extended time/ mileage limit of coverage.

That settlement doesn't include "Europe"
