Tune or wait?
Looking for a little advice here.
I purchased my 2017 M240i a couple years ago and haggled them down a good bit on an extended warranty - first BMW so the peace of mind has been nice and I'm almost fully covered till May 2023. I've been getting the itch to tune it, but obviously have warranty concerns. But if I wait till the warranty is up to throw a tune on it, I'll be around 100k miles and then I have reliability concerns on a higher mileage engine. So the ole catch-22. Do I tune it now and hope I have no issues directly caused by the tune? Or wait a little over 2 years and then pull the trigger? Bought in Nov 2018 with 22k miles, currently 52k. Looking at a Bootmod3 tune, just stage 1 93 as I want it as reliable as possible. Only other mods are intake and Remus axleback, don't think I'd do a DP till I'm out of warranty. Thanks in advance |

A key consideration is if the extended is from BMW or a 3rd party.
If it's BMW and there's an engine problem they'll check for a flash (or other mod) and deny the claim. If it's a 3rd party they may not check for mods. Ask your Service Advisor. I did and was pleased with his response.

It is a BMW warranty, bought the car at a dealer out of state and haven't been to my local dealer at all yet. I've read BMW has to prove the issue was directly caused by the tune to deny a claim, is there any truth to that? I have a feeling they could easily just say the tune caused the damage and I'd have no leg to stand on.

It is a safe bet that BMW would deny any engine warranty claim if the ECU has been flashed or there are any other evident engine mods.

I'm biased, and for these reasons: I've dealt with Dinan on multiple occasions and have been very satisfied with their service and products. I chose their V2 for my 2017 M240i for the 8-10% increase in RWHP and torque that it offers. I chose the V2 because it's enough to make a noticeable difference in output in a car that already has enough power to have the car confiscated if you get caught using all of its power on the highway. Also, the power increase is conservative and well-done enough that it's not going to cause problems. In that context, there's Dinan's Limited Warranty: https://www.dinancars.com/dinan-warranty/. I've flashed street and track cars. For a street car, when one is available I prefer a top-quality piggyback for its ease of installation and removal. For the maximum increase in power, however, on our cars you'll need a flash tune for your specific combination of hardware. Ideally, the tune will be done locally on a dyno, and will then be adjusted based upon pulls you do on the highway or the track. Going this route, you won't be thinking or worrying about a warranty; instead, you'll be looking for maximum gains. I believe the reality is this: unless an owner is looking for dyno queen numbers or max performance at the strip and/or on the track, a product like the Dinan V2 has a lot to offer. I have no affiliation with Dinan, and I'm aware that price/performance is an issue each owner needs to decide for themselves.

I appreciate the responses.
I've considered the Dinan V2, it's just such a tough pill to swallow when it comes to price/performance. The B58 is fairly new, but any common reliability problems arising many miles after a tune? |

Vote for BM3 Tune
I am so impressed by my BM3 -- Cant imagine a tune being any smoother , linear and overall OEM feel at any price.
. . The addition of a downpipe just adds to the experience in allowing the turbo to spool faster and experience greater efficiency due to less heat. I would recommend a DP for Stage 1 as well - not just for Stage 2. . . |
