B46 oil filter - wrong one?
So I ordered a oil change kit from a board sponsor and went to change the oil... 1200 mile change on a 230xi.
I drain the oil and pull the old filter out... and when I look at it versus what I ws given, it looks like the wrong filter.. You can see the new and old filter.. Did I get the wrong filter? Also, how do you remove the filter from the cap to replace it? BTW, I had to put the old filter back in.. Oh.. and the oil filter is a bear to remove.. where it's stuffed in the back! I did torque it back to 25nm, which was on the box of the new filter. You need a 27mm socket to remove the oil filter.

Was the new filter too long ? I can't tell from the picture but it looks close.
The old filter pulls/snaps off the black cap. I usually wear gloves to grasp the filter off the cap. |

No idea if it's to long, but I noticed right away that the old filter had that numb sticking off the bottom and the one they supplied did not. I didn't take a picture of it, but the oil in the center looked to be slightly different too.
I just looked up the part over at ECS and the picture they provide, for the filter, has the knub... Here's the picture that ECS has showing and it matches whats in the car.

Look at the bottom.. see the knub? The one they supplied that 3 little tabs like a clip, not a knub.

That's it! I just went out and looked at the box and they gave me Filter 11428570590. I pretty much knew it couldn't be the same filter that came in the car, but I thought maybe it was one of those things that might allow them to be inter changeable. But I didn't want to chance it.. Thanks!!!.. Now to see how easy it will be to do an exchange...

The dealership is down the street from my office.. If they weren't, I'd be throwing a fit to get them to ship me the correct filter, since it was their mistake.. especially since I gave them the VIN as they requested.

I know this is an old thread, but...
I have a 2016 F48 and it requires an 11428570590 filter. The tops of the filters are quite clear, the 11428575211 is stamped "ONLY ... B46B ..." whereas the 11428570590 filter is stamped "ONLY ... B46A ...". And while I couldn't find it on the underhood stickers, there's an identifying plate on the passenger side of the engine block that identifies the engine in my X1 as a B46A.
So... there are BMWs with the "Mini" engine, and the different flavors of the B46 are used in different models within the same model year. The only way to be sure is to look for the plate on the engine itself. The filter designs are completely non-interchangeable. And if anybody would like a great deal on a few 11428575211 filter kits, PM me... 'cause I've got 'em! Last edited by dbcooper77; 07-19-2018 at 05:41 PM.. |
