Wheel clicking sound while turning - fixed

Hi everyone,

Fixed a clicking noise that was coming from my rear wheels when turning. There seems to be only a few posts on this and the TSB from BMW is for the front wheels but this can absolutely happen with the rear wheels. The problem started a few months after getting my last service from BMW when they changed the rear brakes. So unfortunately now out of warranty!

Here is another post from a few years ago where you can hear the sound:

https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show...light=clicking

The service bulletin is SI B34 05 17 - Ticking Noise While Cornering Without Brakes Applied.

The procedure is fairly simple:

1) Remove calipers and rotors
2) Clean rust off wheel hub and inside of mating surface on rotor.
3) Insert expensive (~40 USD each) shim between hub and rotor.
4) Reassemble.

I say expensive because it is expensive for what it is - a paper thin metal shim. BMW parts are never cheap but this one surprised me. Some of the other threads have stated not to sand the hub / rotor mating surfaces but I used a 220 grit by hand to take off the rust.

The shim is in the picture. It took some care to get the shim aligned with the bolt holes as the center hole is a bit larger than the hub diameter. Inserting the wheel bolts helped, and a small screwdriver works to make sure that the disk retainer bolt or wheel bolts don't hit it.

Note the rear caliper bolts are one time use. Not sure if this is normal but in my case they had so much Nylok type thread locker on them it was hard to get them all the way in. Even the old bolts took a ratchet to get all the way out after the dealer service.

At any rate problem solved .

The shims work due to the friction from the diamond "dust" embedded in the surface. Cost is comparable to diamond encrusted cutting wheels of a similar size.

Thanks - makes sense.

I had the problem in the fronts and the friction plate solved it. Didnīt know that it also happens in rear.

I take note, thank you.
